Two Carson City teachers receive BEST grants

Two teachers received $1,000 each as part of a new program that pairs businesses and educators to teach students about careers.

Gina Hoppe and Genevieve Christie, 5th grade teachers at Fritsch Elementary and Fremont Elementary, respectively, were recognized by the Carson City Schools Foundation’s Business and Education Successful Together, or BEST, program.

“The BEST program provides content mentoring on specific subject matter from experts in business. The partnership provides practical examples to the required curriculum for teachers and students,” said Richard Stokes, superintendent, Carson City School District in a statement. “By matching local businesses with classroom teachers and students we hope to create a dynamic environment where students develop an increased interest in the diverse worksites in our area and begin thinking about the potential career opportunities that exist right here in our community.”

The teachers worked with The Micromanipulator Company, a Carson City manufacturer in the semiconductor industry, which helped them show how topics in the curriculum apply to manufacturing.

The checks were presented to the teachers Wednesday at Northern Nevada Development Authority’s monthly breakfast at the Carson Nugget.

Micromanipulator also donated $2,000 to the school district.
