150 years ago

Sleepy Hollow. There is no use in denying it or dodging it — the best way is to make the best of it — these are the most absolutely stagnant days, the dullest times, the least elastic period, the most inferior and dreamy days and the tamest nights that any of us have experienced since Carson became a town.

140 years ago

Memorial Day. Today the surviving soldiers of the last War of the Rebellion and citizens generally will assemble to do all they can to honor our illustrious dead, whose memories have been rendered sacred by having taken up arms in the service of their country. The custom of decoration of graves of soldiers was instituted by members of the Grand Army of the Republic, who each succeeding year place upon the graves of their fallen comrades fragrant flowers.

100 years ago

Decoration Day will be fittingly observed in Carson City on account of the Grand Army members being so few in number and those remaining so far advanced in years, the Woman’s Relief Corps will have charge of the arrangements and exercises. The program has not as yet been completed, but will consist of appropriate exercises for that day.

70 years ago

Following the annual junior-senior banquet last Saturday night, seniors of Carson High School conducted their customary “ditch day” today. Starting with breakfast in the home of Mrs. George McCracken on 701 N. Walsh St., the graduating class then went to Zephyr Cove, Lake Tahoe, for a picnic.

50 years ago

In line with the proclamation issued by Mayor Robertson, designating June 1 as the start of the annual Carson City Cleanup Campaign, Police Chief Robert Humphreys announced he intended to “get tough” with litterers. The city recently enacted an ordinance with violation being a misdemeanor carrying a fine of $300 or 150 days in jail or both upon conviction.
