SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: Remembering our heroes

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: Memorial Day weekend is a time to remember all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country and to all military personnel and veterans as well. Have fun this weekend — that’s what those who paid the ultimate price, military personnel and veterans would want us to do. But if you’re not at a Memorial Day service, take the time at 3 p.m. Monday to recognize those who paid the ultimate price by recognizing the National Moment of Remembrance.

SILVER DOLLAR: Now that the high school sports season is over, we’d like to recognize some of the top individual performers during the springs sports season. There were numerous top performers in track, including Carson’s Ian Schulz and Dayton’s Zach Hawley, who both won state titles in the shot put. Carson’s Schulz also took second in the discus, teammate Asa Carter placed second in the long jump and triple jump and for the Carson girls, Abby Pradere was second in the 800. Also for Dayton, J.J. Ply won the state title in the pole vault. Sierra Lutheran had numerous state champions led by Elaina Marchegger, who won the 800 and 1,600 to lead the Falcons to the state title. Grace Bonafede also won the state title in the triple jump and Kristy Missamore won the discus for Sierra Lutheran. For the Falcon boys, Jordan Marchegger won the state title in the 3200 and Cameron Dodger won the state title in the 800. In swimming, UNLV-bound Dagen Kipling was a double state champion for Carson. The Douglas boys and girls swimming teams also won the Northern Division I titles.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Western Nevada College baseball team for its run through the postseason, which including a regional title, officially bringing intercollegiate athletics to a close. As Dr. Seuss said: “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”
