One Carson City student spent his Saturday helping prevent erosion.
Jake Kordonowy, 17, a junior at Carson High School and Life Scout of Pinenut District Boy Scout Troop 341, created and completed a plan to prevent further erosion into the city’s municipal water supply in Ash Canyon. In collaboration with Carson City Open Space Senior Natural Resource Specialist, Richard Wilkinson and Nevada Division of Forestry’s Natural Resource Program Manager, John Christopherson, Kordonowy planted nearly 500 saplings, shrubs, ground cover, grasses and more in the Ash Canyon area.
Roughly 40 volunteers of leaders, parents, and scouts of BSA Troop 341, along with members of Masonic Lodge No. 1, helped Kordonowy complete this project Oct. 22.
Irrigation was provided by both Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department as well as Basalite and will continue as needed until plantings are established.
Kordonowy plans to pursue a career in forestry.
