How you can help this holiday season in Carson City area

Yearly the Nevada Appeal runs its “Holiday help list” of ways you can help make the holidays brighter this holiday season. The list will run as much as a possible, a full list will appear online at nevadaappeal.com.

Calvary Chapel is hosting Operation Christmas Child, which collects colorfully wrapped, gift-filled shoe boxes for children in need. To help, pack a shoe box with toys, hygiene items, school supplies and notes of encouragement, and drop the boxes off at Calvary Chapel, 1635 Clearview Drive by Nov. 21. Friends To All is seeking donations for its annual Santa visits to seniors in Carson City that will take place on Saturday, Dec. 17. Donations of cash, crossword puzzle books (large print, if possible), slipper socks, gloves, hats, scarves, handkerchiefs, lotions, lip balm, calendars, packaged small food items such as candy, cookies, or nuts, gift cards from grocery or gift stores, hair salons, barbershops, or restaurants that deliver — basically anything that a senior may be able to use are appreciated. Cash donations are used to purchase gift cards for grocery stores to be given to seniors in need. Donations are 501(c) (3) tax deductible and check donations should be made payable to Friends To All, Inc. A receipt will be provided. Drop-off locations are at A+ Paralegals, Inc., 411 W. Third St., Suite 1; Coldwell Banker Select, 123 W. Second St.; Bradway Properties, 1000 N. Save Mart stores will once again hold the annual Holiday Give. Share. CARE! Drive, making it easier for shoppers to donate. At check-out, customers can tear off a coupon and hand it to the cashier. Shoppers can choose from coupons of $2-5 to add to their grocery bill, and the tax deductible contribution will be noted on their receipt. All donations go to the local food bank assigned to each store. Donations will be accepted through Dec. 27. Donors are encouraged to talk about the help they’re providing on social media by using the hash tag #SaveMartGiving.

Evergreen Gene’s, 1811 N. Carson St., is hosting a sock and glove tree for the Do Drop In Center from Nov. 25 through Jan. 3. It also is accepting various clothing items, toiletries, and non perishable food items. Donations benefit area homeless. Call Gene or Rowena at 775-882-1807.

All branches of the Lyon County Library System are accepting non-perishable food as a payment for overdue fines through Dec. 31. For every fine you owe, bring in one item of non-perishable food and the library will waive one Lyon County Library System fine. Non-perishable items include canned and dried vegetables, fruits, soups, meats, and stews, boxed and dried juices and milk; flavored, pre-packaged rice and noodles, cereals, pre-packaged hot beverage and seasoning mixes. No jars.

The Salvation Army and KOH 780 Radio are rounding up turkeys to help provide a Thanksgiving meal to families in need. All turkeys will be given out by the Salvation Army through its food bank and other area food banks to needy families in the Carson City, Douglas County, Dayton, Washoe Valley and Lake Tahoe area. Frozen turkeys can be dropped from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 18 at Max Casino, 900 S. Carson St., Carson City and C.O.D. Casino, 1593 Esmeralda Ave., Minden. Call 775-887-9120.

Walton’s Funerals & Cremations is again collecting new and gently used coats, sweaters and gloves through November for homeless veterans. Donations can be brought at any Walton’s location — 1281 N. The 24th annual Share Your Christmas Drive-By Food Drive will be collecting non-perishable goods from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 9. The local nonprofits Advocates to End Domestic Violence, FISH and Ron Wood Family Resource Center will benefit. Food donations also can be dropped from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Carson Valley Inn in Minden, or before Dec. 9 at Genoa Volunteer Fire Department, 340 Jacks Valley Road, Genoa.

Pets of the Homeless is seeking donations to help homeless and their pets this holiday season. To reach its goal for this year, the nonprofit needs another 24,000 pounds of pet food donated and $43,000 raised nationally.
