More services available to Western Nevada College students (Western Nevada College News & Notes)

For students who are new to Western Nevada College, registration begins for classes on Monday, Nov. 14.

With increased attention to serve students’ online preferences and needs, the college can now answer their questions through a chat service, schedule appointments with key student service officers and provide an option to join a class wish list as they transition into spring semester.

Students can access the live chat at the bottom right-hand corner of the college website at wnc.edu.

Live chat is available from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, unless the college is closed. Questions that are submitted after hours or on weekends will be answered on the following business day.

For students needing to speak to a representative from the Financial Aid Office, Counseling Services or Latino Outreach, there’s a new online booking system to meet students’ schedules. Students who want to speak to a financial assistance rep by phone can schedule an appointment at www.wnc.edu/financial and clicking on the link to schedule a telephone appointment or going to the direct booking site at http://fawnc.youcanbook.me/. To speak to a Latino Outreach rep, schedule a phone appointment at http://wnclatinocohort.youcanbook.me/. To reserve a time to speak with a member of the Counseling Services Department, go to http://wncgencounseling.youcanbook.me.

As students register for classes, they will, on occasion, encounter a class that becomes full. Full classes will generate a wish list button, giving students the opportunity to be contacted if a class becomes available or if additional sections are added.

WNC Takes a One Day Stand against Tobacco

In a concerted effort to establish a tobacco-free campus, Western Nevada College is holding a One Day Stand Against Tobacco on Thursday, Nov. 17 on all three of its campuses.

“It’s literally a one-day stand to get people to quit for one day,” said Rebecca Bevans, WNC’s chair for a Healthy Campus Committee and program coordinator for the tobacco implementation policy. “We’re really trying to come from the point of view of making the campus a healthy environment for everyone.”

To encourage students, faculty and staff to cease their habits, they will be presented with gift cards to Starbucks or Yogurt Beach if they turn in their tobacco products.

Carson City Health and Human Services will set up information tables in WNC’s Bristlecone and Dini buildings and provide tobacco users with people to talk to and additional information about their habits.

The Carson City and Fallon campuses will conduct the education campaign from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., while the program runs from 5 to 7 p.m. on the Douglas campus.

Participants are also encouraged to take a survey and will be entered into a prize drawing, as long as they provide their email addresses. Prizes include certificates for lunch at the Wildcat Den.

For the current school year, WNC established a policy to promote a healthier learning and working environment by confining the use of nicotine and vapor products to designated outdoor areas on its three campuses. The eventual plan is for WNC to join the more than 1,400 colleges and universities in the U.S. that have adopted a tobacco-free campus policy.

WNC to Hold Mannequin Challenge on Nov. 15

The Internet’s latest obsession has found its way to Western Nevada College. The Associated Students of Western Nevada is holding a Mannequin Challenge on Tuesday, Nov. 15 to promote hope and unity.

Participants of the Mannequin Challenge pose and create a scene. The community is invited to participate.

“We will be doing a sporting event scene,” said ASWN President Diana Gurrola. “We will hold posters with positive quotes on them to encourage and inspire the WNC community.”

WNC to Close for Thanksgiving Holiday, Nov. 24-25

Students and the public should note the Western Nevada College campus in Carson City will be closed for business on Thanksgiving Day on Nov. 24, as well as Friday, Nov. 25.

Although WNC will observe an instructional holiday on Wednesday, Nov. 23, meaning no classes for students, the campus will be open for business.

WNC will resume normal business hours on Monday, Nov. 28.
