Senator Square: Carson High School students are on the move

Students at CHS are always on the move in many mighty ways. With the holidays approaching, Carson High School students are the next generation of kids standing up for a truth they believe in instead of ignoring the challenges they see before them. Individuals, groups, and clubs on campus are teaming up to do something extraordinary like Key Club, Interact Club, and CHS’ Student Council working together to assemble holiday dinners for the hungry through volunteering at the Salvation Army Church. Then there’s Mia Brozovich fulfilling her Senior Project Graduation requirement by taking the hearts of people experiencing hunger and homelessness and turning their days into light with her “Hygiene Kits for the Homeless Children.” CHS students are ignoring the temptation to sit around and do nothing; instead, they’re taking to the streets to fight for those not able to fight for themselves as they decide to serve the less fortunate and not wait around to be served themselves. What an honor it is to teach and work with the students of this amazing high school.

CHS AMERICAN CITIZEN ESSAY CONTEST WINNERS

Results of the 2016-2017 board sponsored American Citizen Essay Contest are in, and CHS students in Mr. Brady’s Honors English I class did exceptionally well. First place went to Kathryn Jeffries, grade 9; second place goes to Jazmari Valdivia, grade 9; and third place belongs to Kieran Dazzo, grade 9. The students and their parents have been invited to attend the School Board meeting Nov. 22 where they’ll be recognized for their accomplishment. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Sierra Room at the Carson City Community Center. Congratulations to all who took the time to participate in this annual contest offered by the Carson City School District’s Board of Trustees.

CHS CLUBS AND STUDENTS WORKING TOGETHER

CHS clubs and students volunteered at the Salvation Army Church Nov. 12 to assemble contents of dinners for the holidays together for people who can’t afford the food items to make those dinners themselves. Key Club, Interact Club, and CHS Student Council were the clubs present, along with a host of other students as well.

“I always love going to the Salvation Army church…anytime we can help the community as a school is always a good time…helping other people is what Student Council is all about,” said CHS Student Body President Danny Dudley.

“I love this event, it’s one of my favorite opportunities to volunteer, and I love that you can see the progress as you go through the event, and the boxes get fuller and the piles get smaller; it’s amazing how you can make such a difference with only a few hours,” Student Body Public Relations Officer Makayl Holloway said.

Student Council Adviser Ann Britt said, “The event went well; we packed over 1,000 boxes that will help feed more than 1,000 families in our community.”

CHS SENIOR PROJECTS ARE HAPPENING

As a CHS graduation requirement, every senior is required to plan and participate in an individual Senior Project. As a senior who loves to be involved and active inside and outside of school, Mia Brozovich took on a project that demonstrated both her leadership skills and community service interest. Brozovich has participated in more than 10 extra-curricular activities at school while being in honors and AP classes. Outside of school, she also participates in food boxing and delivery to needy families at Carson Valley Food Bank and helps the Salvation Army with serving foods to unaccompanied fostered youth at Tahoe Family Youth Services. On Nov. 12, Brozovich hosted a donations’ drive where the community came together to donate hygiene materials. Her project, “Hygiene Kits for the Homeless Children” will end with more than 500 kits made from the hygiene materials and a 100 homeless mats made from the crocheted plastic bags. Although she exceeded her personal goal, she decided not to stop and set a new goal to collect more materials through January. Brozovich and her family, along with mentor, Heidi Ghan, helped to make the project a success. Brozovich thanks CHS, local radio stations, news stations, the Nevada Appeal and CarsonNow.org for promoting the event. She also thanks the community for coming together to help homeless children. Brozovich says, “I believe that giving is not just about making a donation; giving is actually about making a difference in someone’s life.”

Carson High School’s website, www.carsonhigh.com has new information. There’s now an “Attendance Information” link at the top left-hand side under Quick Links. This link will give parents information on how to report a student absence, report appointments, or report something other than the aforementioned. The attendance manual is also listed, so parents may review CHS’ latest expectations from the Carson City School District.

SENATOR SCHOLARSHIP SCOOP AND COLLEGE CONNECTIONS

CHS will host a FAFSA workshop Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. in the CHS library. The free application for Federal Student Aid is the required form that determines students’ eligibility for financial aid for college. Representatives from WNC and UNR’s Financial Aid offices will be present to help parents and students complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid for the 2017-2018 school year. All students and parents are invited even if the student plans to attend a college other than WNC or UNR. The FAFSA can be completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students should stop by the Counseling Office for a list of documents that are required to fill out the FAFSA. There will be Spanish speakers at the event for families who require translation.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK

Nestor Beltran is an extremely polite student at CHS. He is also very a focused student and motivated in all he does. He does his best in every activity, and CHS is what it is because of students like Nestor Beltran and his participation.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

The Senior Spotlight this week is Juliet Favero. As a student at CHS, she has maintained excellent grades during her freshman, sophomore, junior and the first semester of her senior year. Juliet has taken both Honors and AP classes while maintaining a 4.07 weighted GPA. As a senior, she’s enrolled in the Jump Start program at Western Nevada Community College. Juliet has been involved in Girls Varsity Golf and Speech and Debate, and outside of school, Juliet plays the guitar, is involved with the Polar Express, and she even sings and writes her own songs. She plans to attend Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and major in communications. CHS knows Juliet will be successful in all her future endeavors.
