Carson City’s BAC again finalist for concert series

Carson City is once again in the running for the Levitt AMP grant that funded the Brewery Arts Center’s 2016 summer concert series.

Online voting by the public placed the BAC sixth among 25 arts organizations from medium-sized cities such as Santa Fe, N.M., and Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

“The Brewery Arts Center is so fortunate to be a part of such a supportive community. So many people, from city leaders to school teachers to all the other nonprofits to teens and youth, rallied and got the word out. We moved up from 17th place last year in the voting to 6th place this year,” said Gina Lopez Hill, BAC executive director. “We are very thankful to everyone that voted and we will keep everyone posted as we wait for the results on Jan. 5. It’s always amazing to me what happens when a group of people work together towards a common goal. Win or lose, the community came together and I’m very thankful.”

Next, the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation will review the 25 finalists and narrow it done to 15 recipients.

Each will receive $25,000 in a matching grant to host 10 or more outdoor, free music concerts in 2017.

The 15 winners will be announced on Jan. 5, 2017.

The foundation’s goal is to “bring the joy of free, live music to people of all ages and backgrounds living in small to mid-sized towns and cities, transforming underused public spaces into thriving community destinations.”

The BAC outdoor concerts are held at the Minnesota Street outdoor stage and feature food, drink and activities in addition to live music.

The 2016 series ran from June 4 to Aug. 6 and included Southern Drawl Band, SambaDa’ and Incendio.
