The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps is looking for young people ages 10-17 to join the Carson City Division and to possibly form a new Division in the area.
The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps is a nonprofit program comprised of young people who have an interest in the military or other seagoing careers.
The program is managed by volunteers dedicated to instilling the core values of honor, courage and commitment.
Sea Cadets wear traditional U.S. Navy uniforms and can participate in a multitude of training programs.
Training programs take place primarily during the summer months and include SCUBA certification, photojournalism, culinary arts, search and rescue, SEAL orientation, submarine orientation, and international exchanges.
Additionally, cadets have the opportunity to train aboard vessels at sea with the Navy, Coast Guard, and NOAA. New cadets traditionally attend orientation training during their first summer where they learn about fire-fighting, damage control, military drill, and military customs.
In addition to summer training programs, cadets are encouraged to adopt a life of volunteerism within their local communities. Volunteer opportunities include helping local charitable organizations, volunteering at senior centers, assisting with local arts programs, and many others.
Cadet applicants must be crime-free, drug-free, physically fit, and enrolled in an accredited school or home school program appropriate for their age group.
Adult volunteers, with or without military experience, are needed to allow the Sea Cadet program to grow. Those with seamanship, engineering, administrative and fundraising skills are especially needed.
Current military members are eligible for the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal through sustained support of the program. Additionally, reserve military members could be eligible to receive retirement points for volunteering.
Carson City Division Cadets currently train at 3601 Romans Road in Carson City on the second Saturday and Sunday of each month from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Interested families are asked to contact the Division recruiting hotline at 775-220-7911 or by email at michael.hertel@ccdivnsccc.org to arrange an interview.
