Community spotlight: Dayton greats inducted into Hall of Fame

Dayton High School inducted five new members into its athletic Hall of Fame last weekend.

Kathie Arias, Paul Howard, Jeremy Kinney. Travis Wood and the late Shannon Wines were inducted Friday at a dinner, and then introduced to the Homecoming football crowd later that night.

Arias was a track, volleyball and basketball standout at Dayton. She won three straight state shot put and discus titles, and attended Cornell. She fractured her ankle her freshman track season and returned to northern Nevada. She’s close to graduating from the University of Nevada.

Howard also excelled in track as well as football. He was the state champ in the shot put his junior year and was second his senior season. He earned first-team all-state honors on offense and was second-team all-state his senior season.

Kinney played four years of baseball at Dayton and two years of football. He was all-conference his final three seasons, and he still holds team records for homers in a single season (15) and career (26). He had 119 strikeouts in 84 innings and once struck out 17 batters in a game.

Wood led Dayton to its only 3A conference title as a senior. Dayton reached the state semifinals his senior season. He was second-team all conference as a sophomore and a first-team pick as a junior. He excelled as a punter and safety. In basketball, he helped the Dust Devils to three straight Northern 3A titles.

Wines, who passed away in April, spent 28 years at Dayton. He coached football, golf, girls JV basketball and track. He was an avid 49ers and Giants fan.

Steelers edge Rams

The Steelers edged the Rams, 53-50, in the featured game of the Talents NFL Flag Football League at Eagle Valley Middle School.

The Steelers went 2-1 on the week thanks to nine TD passes from Jacob Hansen and four TD passes from Christian Smith. Matthew Doan also scored four TDs. They also beat the Cowboys 40-12 and lost to the first-place Cardinals 49-21.

Led by Victor Contreras, Trevor Marlin and Alex Myrehn, the Cardinals won three more times to improve to 6-0. They beat the Cowboys 59-31, the Steelers 49-21 and the Rams 42-14. Contreras scored nine TDs, Myrehn scored four TDs and threw for seven more, and Marlin scored 13 TDs. Brandon Escobar accounted for six scores.

The Rams went 1-2 last week, as Joey Altermerano threw 13 TD passes, Erick Vasquez scored nine times and Gabriel Cuevas added five scores. The Cowboys went 0-3 and fell to 0-6. Sean Finn had six TD passes and Andres Rivas scored five times.

Cabela’s plans big

events this month

Advanced Electronic Hearing Protection will be available for testing in the hunting department; and at 2 p.m., Cabela’s award-winning line of Instinct Optics will be on display for demonstrations and testing at the optics counter.

Guest appearances will include The Well-Armed Woman, Saturday Oct. 15th at 1 p.m., to present a free Introduction to Handguns course in conference room 1.
