CHS girls cross up Douglas for win

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.

Carson proved that in its 1-0 Sierra League victory over Douglas Saturday afternoon at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

Carson improved to 10-0-1 and opened up a five-point lead on the Tigers.

“We played better than we have been playing,” Carson coach Greg Lehman said. “There are still a few things we need to work on like finishing and creating more opportunities. We did do a better job communicating and keeping possession.”

The Senators didn’t have a ton of opportunities, and their lone goal came off a crossing pass and not a shot.

In the 67th minute, Lauren Hudak was on the right side of the field, and sent a cross toward the Douglas goal. In a maze of bodies, the ball ended up getting past Douglas keeper Grace Brooks.

“It (the ball) was bouncing,” Hudak said. “I just sent it in. The way it came off my foot I had a feeling it was going toward the goal. I’m surprised it went in.”

Douglas had a goal wiped out when a Tigers player crashed into the Carson goalie in the 68th minute. Other than that, the Tigers never generated much offense thanks to an airtight defense led by Valerie Sue Meyer and Hailey Palotas.

“This is a huge win,” Meyer said. “Senior year and beating Douglas at home…

“If we keep doing what we’re doing and everybody gives their best effort we’ll be successful.”

Carson boys roll

The Senators tuned up for their Wednesday showdown with league-leading Galena by blanking the Tigers, 8-0, Saturday afternoon.

Carson improved to 9-2 while Douglas dropped to 1-9-1.

Eddie Porter and Jaime Saldana scored two goals each for Carson, while Peter Garrett, Guillermo Hernandez, Oscar Ventura and Danny Manzo scored one goal each.

Saldana scored in the 15th minute to break the scoreless tie, and Hernandez added a goal about a minute later to make it 2-0. In the 22nd minute, Saldana flicked in his second goal, and five minutes later Ventura made it 4-0. Porter scored in the 35th and 37th minute to make it 6-0 at the intermission.

Jose Gonzalez played in goal for the Senators, who gave Efren Ramirez the day off. Ramirez, however, played midfield in the second half.

“It allowed us to play everybody,” Carson coach Frank Martinez said. “Overall I’m pleased. It was a good tune-up for Galena.

“We’re looking better. We had good movement of the ball.”

Carson in tourney action

Carson (15-6) was scheduled to play six matches in the Carmichael Invitational Volleyball Tournament and went 2-2 in its first four matches on Saturday. Carson lost to St. Ignatius 9-25, 17-25, beat Ponderosa 29-27, 26-24 and Bear Creek 20-25, 25-22, 15-4 and then lost to Tracy 12-25, 26-24, 14-16.

Against St. Ignatius, Jacyie Roberts had five kills, Shea DeJoseph had four kills and Natalie Anderson added 11 assists.

Against Ponderosa, Roberts had eight kills, Anderson had 18 assists and Abby Pradere added seven digs. Against Bear Creek, Roberts had a huge match with 16 kills and Anderson added 16 assists.

Against Tracy, Roberts had 12 kills and Anderson added 20 assists.

Dayton sweeps two

Dayton swept past Spring Creek 25-12, 25-16, 25-19 on Friday and Elko 25-22, 25-21, 25-17 on Saturday.

Dayton coach Monica Halverson said her team wasn’t distracted after hosting a Dig 4 a Cure event to raise funds for stage 4 breast cancer research.

Dayton started off fast against Spring Creek behind the passing and setting of Kallie Strong, Brianda Diaz and Kassie Strong. Halverson also said Makenna Losen had one of her best matches of the season. “She has really come into her own with hitting the ball and controlling her block,” Halverson said.

Olsen and Diaz each had eight kills, Kallie Strong had 32 assists and Hailey Wells added 19 digs.

Dayton was impressive against an Elko team that had beaten South Tahoe in five games on Friday. “I think we are finding our momentum again,” Halverson said. “We had a lot of great saves and plays off of balls that were flying out of bounds. Lastly, my teams ability to play defense has begun to really shape up and we are closing our blocks and covering the court better.”

Olsen had seven kills, Kalllie Strong had 19 assists and Hailey Strong added 15 digs for Dayton (7-3 in league).

Virginia City wins in 4

VIRGINIA CITY – Virginia City (16-3, 8-1) beat Smith Valley 25-23, 19-25, 31-29, 25-8. Emily Heinz had a huge serving match with 12 aces and added four kills, 14 assists and five digs for the Muckers.

Also for Virginia City, Bethany Fuller had two aces, 10 kills, two assists and 10 digs, Chelsea Nevin had two aces, 14 kills, 14 assists, three digs and three blocks and Kaitlin Hames added four kills and 29 digs.

Virgnia City (11-7, 5-3) lost the junior varsity match 15-25, 13-25.

Yerington sweeps

WEST WENDOVER – Yerington (19-7, 9-0) swept West Wendover 25-9, 25-14, 25-13. Ashley Rife had 13 assists, seven kills and 16 digs, Mya Murphy had 17 digs, Liz Moreda had 10 digs and Rachel Dane added nine digs for the Lions.

Dayton runs well

WINNEMUCCA — J.J. Ply picked off five runners in the last 1 1/2 miles to finish sixth at Friday’s meet at the Winnemucca Golf Course.

Ply was timed in 17:13. Jason Logan was 23rd in 18:39, taking two minutes off his time from last year. Austin Duarte was 27th in 18:55, Madsen Evans was 31st in 19:04 and Logan Allander was 43rd in 19:54. Jared Logan was 44th in 19:55. In JV boys, Andrew Matthews was 14th in 20:49 and in girls JV Alex Newsted was 23rd in 27:06.

“I was quite pleased with my runners today,” coach Shawn Anderson said. “Everyone ran a PR with many taking 1 1/2 to 2 minutes off their time from last year.”

Carson girls finish 20th

CLOVIS, Calif. — Led by Gabby Fernandez’s 72nd place finish, the Carson High varsity girls finished 20th at the Asics Clovis Invitational Saturday at Woodward Park.

Fernandez took a spill near the start, but battled back and ran a 20:16.3. Rheanna Jackson improved by 39 seconds and Makaela Bigley finished 100th in a PR of 20:43.5. Bigley was two minutes faster than her previous best. Blanca Sosa was 122nd in 21:12 and Jaidyn Shepard was 146th in 21:37.1.

“The girls ran pretty well,” coach Pete Sinnott said. “Gabby might have had a PR if she hadn’t gotten knocked down early in the race.”

The boys were 34th out of 35 teams.

Logan Mead was 155th in 17:36.8 and freshman Zach Sever had a PR of 17:52.5 en route to finishing 174th. Hunter Rauh was 179th in 17:55.1 and Adan Garcia was 207th in 18:37.6, also a PR. Jayson Legott was 218th in 18:58.1, a best by 25 seconds.
