MINDEN — The Douglas Tigers scored 29 unanswered points over the final 11 minutes Friday night, only to come up short on the short end of a 47-42 score against Damonte Ranch.

Quarterback Hunter Hickey threw two of his four touchdown passes in the final 2 minutes, 20 seconds as the Tigers rallied from a 47-13 deficit to make it close at the end during the Sierra League contest at Keith Roman Field.

Douglas (1-1 league, 3-4 overall) had an opportunity to go for the win with 1:10 showing on the clock, but was unable to convert the onside kick attempt.

Hickey threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Alex Harker with 2:20 left to play and after the Tigers recovered an onside kick, the junior threw a 10-yard scoring pass to tight end Reagan Roberson.

Will Williams ignited the comeback with an 81-yard kick return for a touchdown as the Tigers cut their deficit to 47-20. Dawson Coman followed with a 48-yard touchdown run with 7:02 showing on the clock.

On the other hand, Damonte Ranch quarterback Cade McNamara threw five touchdown passes to help stake the Mustangs to their early lead. The sophomore threw scoring passes of 71 and 35 yards to Dru Jacobs in the second quarter. Thomas Wright caught a 41-yard touchdown pass from McNamara to make it 47-13 on the third play of the fourth quarter.

Cameron Sandoval ran for two touchdowns for the Mustangs, including a 71-yard dash to open the scoring in the first quarter.

Sierra Lutheran splits

Sierra Lutheran split a pair of matches against Sage Ridge on Friday, winning 25-9, 15-25, 15-12 and losing 18-25, 16-25.

In the win, Gabby Kale had five kills and three aces and Kimberly Eckert added six digs for the Falcons. In the loss, Abby Ferenz had 10 digs and Eckert added seven digs for Sierra Lutheran.

Miners outlast Carson

RENO — Manogue built up an early 21-point lead en route to a 42-28 win over Carson Thursday night.

The Senators closed to 28-21, but couldn’t get any closer.

Blake Menzel had three rushing TDs for Carson and Chance Smith scored on a 10-yard run.

Carson boys, girls host DHS

The Carson boys and girl soccer teams host Douglas at 12:30 p.m. today at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

The varsity girls, who lead the Sierra League with a 9-0-1 record, figure to get a tough challenge from Douglas which is 8-1-1 after getting its 10-match winning streak stopped. Carson leads Galena by one point and the Tigers by two points.

Yanitzia Perez has scored six of her 10 goals in the last three games for the Senators.

Mallory Otto has 10 goals and Isabella Wakeling has tallied six times.

Douglas’ Peri Buck and Alex Buck were injured in the recent loss to Galena, and it’s not known whether they will play against CHS.

Carson’s boys squad plays at 10:45 a.m.

The Senators are coming off a 2-0 win over the defending Sierra League champion Wooster Colts and are currently 8-2 in league play with a showdown looming on Wednesday against league-leading Galena.

Guillermo Hernandez has six goals and Eddie Porter five, including a hat trick against McQueen. Osvaldo Gomez has five goals and Alejandro Gonzalez has four. Gomez has been switched to the back line in the absence of Guillermo Perez-Morris, who was suspended for four games. It’s not known if he will return to the team.

Douglas is 1-8-1 thus far, and recently had four players leave the team.
