Yesterday the Appeal contained an article relative to regulating Mr. Powning and making him keep his place in the Republican Party. If half of what the writer heard in Reno relative to Mr. Powning last Friday is true, he has no more right in the Republican Party than Jewett Adams.

The Board of City Trustees met last evening and discussed and took action on several interesting matters. The Truckee River General Electric company requested the board rescind its action to have the company move its poles from Carson Street to a back street. The Trustees sent a letter to the utility to move the poles anyway. Mayor MacDonald also resigned to remove conflict in his race for long-term commissioner for Ormsby County.

Plans for the early organization of the Nevada Air National Guard moved swiftly ahead today following the announcement yesterday of the appointment and assignment of Lt. Col. Ira F. Wintermute as air instructor for the proposed organization. The guard air wing will be located at the Reno Army Air base.

Lt. Gov. Paul Laxalt warned a capacity audience in Carson Valley last night that “we’re up against the most formidable political machine this state has ever seen. The highly-financed political machine put together the past eight years by Gov. Sawyer would make the old-time Senator Pat McCarran organization look like a bunch of children.”

You will find about six inches of white space on page A6 of today’s Nevada Appeal which has been intentionally left blank to mark the death of Bill Dolan, who has filled the space with “Past Pages” for 59 years. The empty space is a visual mark representing the void left in the hearts of family and those of us in his extended newspaper family, who learned of his death Thursday.
Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
