Trick-or-treating in Carson City falls on Halloween, Oct. 31

This year Carson City children will be trick-or-treating on the same night as everyone else — Halloween, Monday, Oct. 31.

Trick-or-treating in the capital city moves when both Halloween and the Nevada Day Parade fall on Oct. 31. This year’s parade is on Saturday, Oct. 29.

Before 2000, the Nevada Day Parade was always on Oct. 31 — the anniversary of the state’s admission to the union, and, coincidentally, Halloween.

In order to keep the children out of the way of any revelers drunk with state pride, trick-or-treating was moved to Oct. 30.

When the 1999 Legislature decided to observe Nevada Day on the last Friday in October, and the Nevada Day Parade on the last Saturday of the month, Halloween returned to being celebrated on Oct. 31.

Halloween won’t be celebrated on Oct. 30 until 2020, and again in 2026 and 2037.

Other Halloween celebrations offering the chance for kids to dress up and collect candy are being held on the days leading up to Halloween.

From 3 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, kids can collect candy from trunk to trunk — instead of door to door — at Carson City Cruise’s Trunk N Treat event at Old Hot Springs Road and Challenger Way. The event doubles as a cruise meet and greet open to all makes and models. Trick-or-treating starts at 4:30 p.m. Donations also will be collected for Food For Thought. Carson City Library will be offering spooky crafts, games and a costume contest from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26 in the Digitorium, 900 N. Roop St. The library will be open to trick-or-treaters from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Halloween.

Carson Tahoe Health’s annual Spooktacular celebration from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 27 offers trick-or-treating, a bounce house, booths, and displays of fire trucks, ambulances and a CareFlight helicopter. The free event takes place in the north parking lot at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center.

The Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada’s Safe Halloween Celebration is from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30. The event, at 813 N. Carson St., includes trick-or-treating and Halloween crafts for $5 per child. Call 775-884-2226 for more information.
