Prep roundup: CHS girls soccer closes in on league title

RENO — Carson High’s soccer team moved one step closer to the Sierra League title with a 3-0 win over Bishop Manogue on a windy Saturday afternoon at Nancy Sweet Memorial Field.

Carson improved to 12-0-1, maintaining its lead over Galena and Douglas. The Senators return to action Tuesday at home against Damonte Ranch and Saturday at home against Wooster.

Carson had the wind at its back in the opening half, and the Senators took full advantage, scoring all three of their goals on eight shots.

Bella Wakeling scored in the 15th minute, punching home a shot on a loose ball in the box.

Fifteen minutes later, freshman Micah Merriner pounded a shot which was blocked by the Manogue keeper. She failed to control the ball, and Merriner pounded it home to make it 2-0. Sophia Ruedy found the right corner of the net in the 36th minute.

Manogue, playing against the wind in the opening half, failed to get a shot off. The Miners attempted two shots in the second half, but neither was close. Carson had four shots in the second half, the best being Lauren Hudak’s attempt in the 55th minute. She slipped as she kicked the ball and it went wide.

“We were able to play well when we were against the wind,” Carson coach Greg Lehman. “We did a good job of keeping possession in the second half. We didn’t give them very good chance in the second half.

“Hailey (Palotas) did a good job in the back. These were tough conditions to play in.”

Palotas filled the void by Valerie Sue Meyer’s absence. According to Lehman, Meyer was in California on a college visit. Two players arrived late to the game because of testing.

Strong 2nd half carries CHS

RENO — The Senators got two goals apiece from Eddie Porter and Efren Ramirez en route to a 6-3 win over Manogue on Saturday at Nancy Sweet Memorial Field.

Carson improved to 10-3.

Playing with the wind at its back, Oscar Ventura scored in the 15th minute for a 1-0 lead.

Porter made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute, but the Miners tallied two unanswered goal, tying the game at 2.

The Senators then scored four goals, one each by Guillermo Hernandez and Porter and two by Ramirez, who got the day off from playing keeper. Hernandez’s goal hit the left corner of the upright and spun into the net. Porter poked home a shot off a corner kick to make it 4-2. Ramirez scored Carson’s final two scores at the 57th and 78th minute, respectively.

Carson played without Chrisian Martinez, Ernesto Lamas and Rael Lopez, all of whom were taking the PSAT.

“It’s always hard to play here,” Carson coach Frank Martinez said. “We should have taken advantage of our opportunities in the first half (with the wind). The wind makes it tough.”

Carson hosts Damonte on Saturday, and then it’s another showdown with Wooster. The winner of that game will get a first-round home game in the playoffs.

• Carson JV won 8-1 as Jose Godinez, Angel Gonzalez and Ricardo Gonzalez scored two goals apiece.

VOLLEYBALL

Yerington wins twice

YERINGTON — The Lions improved to 11-0 with wins over Lovelock and Battle Mountain.

On Friday, Yerington topped Lovelock 25-11, 25-10 and 25-16. Ashley Rife had 17 assists, five digs and 11 kills and Rachel Dane added 10 assists, five digs and three kills. Deseree Landa contributed 21 digs.

On Saturday, Yerington rolled 25-13, 25-13 and 25-15. Rife had 10 kills, seven digs, five aces and 16 assists. Dane added eight assists, two kills, two digs and four aces. Landa had 17 assists.

Dayton subdues Lowry

DAYTON — The Dust Devils improved to 9-3 with a 27-25, 25-18 and 25-23 win over Lowry Saturday afternoon.

Dayton has a tough road game Wednesday at South Tahoe and a Saturday home match against Truckee, two of the best teams in the 3A.

“We played smart and together as a team,” Dayton coach Monica Halverson said. “Our defense was on. We were quick to the ball and finished each set.”

Brianda Diaz had 14 kills and 13 digs, while Makenna Olsen had five kills and five blocks. Kallie Strong had 31 assists and eight digs, Hailey Wells added 17 digs, and Ashley Mason contributed six kills and 10 digs. Kassie Strong had four kills and three blocks.

Muckers sweep Coleville

VIRGINIA CITY — The Muckers, thanks to 12 kills and 15 assists from Chelsea Nevin, rolled to a 3-0 win Saturday in a Division I match.

Bethany Fuller added 10 kills and five digs, Emily Heinz contributed 17 assists, three digs and six kills, and Kim Tlapa had 22 digs and two kills.

Carson 3-2 in San Diego

SAN DIEGO — The Senators, after going 2-1 and winning their pool on Friday, split two matches Saturday at the Xfinity Southern California Invitational.

The Senators concluded pool play with a loss to West Hills late Friday. Jaycie Roberts had 19 kills, eight digs and two blocks. Keelin Pilgrim had five kills and 10 blocks, Natalie Anderson had 34 assists, Abby Pradere had eight digs and Shea DeJoseph added six kills.

On Saturday, Carson lost in straight sets to Elsinore and then beat Bonita Vista in three sets. Stats were not available from those matches.

TENNIS

Good day for CHS

RENO — Two Carson doubles teams are still alive and Ryan Tomita is still playing in singles after a windy Saturday.

Only one round of boys singles and one round of doubles was played before weather forced a halt in the action. The rest of the tournament will be played at Manogue. The girls take the court Monday while the boys resume Tuesday. Semifinals and finals are scheduled for Wednesday.

Tomita rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 win over Reno’s Lucas Cofer. Tomita will play No. 3 Mikael Tillikainen in the quarters.

Jayson Artz and Taylor Saarem cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 win and Daniel Dudley and Nico Salm won 6-3, 6-0. Stu McElhany and Alec Henricksen lost a three-setter, 6-2 in the third.

CROSS COUNTRY

Dayton runners take 2nd

SILVER SPRINGS — Dayton High led by J.J. Ply’s first-place finish took second in the 3A meet Friday.

Dayton and Fernley actually tied, but Dayton won because its sixth runner posted a better time than Fernley’s sixth runner.

Ply clocked a 15:55 for the 5K course. Jason Logan was fifth at 17:41, Austin Duarte was ninth at 18:06, Madsen Evans was 10th in 19:12 and Jared Logan was 21st at 19:36.
