Prep roundup: CHS volleyball wins first two in San Diego

SAN DIEGO — The Carson High volleyball team got off to a good start at the Xfinity Southern California Invitational, winning its first two matches on Friday.

Carson beat Saddleback Valley 2-0 and Grossmont 2-0. Against Saddleback, Jaycie Roberts had 10 kills, Keelin Pilgrim had five kills, Natalie Anderson had 24 assists and Abby Pradere added 10 digs.

Against, Grossmont, Roberts had 13 kills, Pilgrim had five kills and Anderson added 20 assists.

Dayton sweeps

Fernley — Dayton swept Fernley 25-14, 25-22, 25-11. “We played a solid game,” Dayton coach Monica Halverson said. “My team is doing a great job of closing out a set.”

Brianda Diaz had a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs for Dayton.

Makenna Olsen had seven kills and nine digs, Ashley Mason had nine kills, Kallie Strong had 27 assists, Hailey Wells had 14 digs and Kassie Strong added four blocks for the Dust Devils (8-3 in league).


TENNIS

Regionals resume today

RENO — The Northern 4A regionals resume today at 9 a.m. at the Coughlin Club.

Because of inclimate weather, the tournament is likely to be concluded on Monday or even Tuesday.

Carson’s boys squad has all three of its doubles teams left (Jayson Artz and Taylor Saarem, Nico Salm and Danny Dudley, and Stu McElhany and Alec Henricksen) and one singles player, Ryan Tomita.

Shaylin Segura and Elise Brady are still alive in singles, and all three doubles squads (Nancy Henricksen and Mikaela Asby, Emma Breeding and Tanya Woodbury, and Emily McCaskill and Amanda Schulz) moved into the second round.


FOOTBALL

Galena-Manogue postponed

Because of the fire near Galena High, Friday’s 4A football game scheduled for Galena has been moved to today. Kick-off is at 7 p.m.

Carson JVs triumph

The Senators continued their winning ways with a 37-22 win over Damonte Ranch Thursday night in Reno.

Blake Menzel scored all five touchdowns, as Carson rushed for more than 200 yards thanks to the efforts of Menzel, Tucker Nichols and Zach Glanzmann. Cole Ashton, Carl Cavner, Garrett Clampitt, Jonathan Acosta and Clayton Greene were praised for their play on the offensive line.

Defensively, Cavner, Acosta, Jaden Dyer and Niko Desormier did an outstanding job.


GOLF

State at Eagle Valley

The NIAA 4A State Championship is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday on the West course at Eagle Valley.

Action begins at 10 a.m., both days, and there’s no admission charge.

There are no Douglas or Carson players in the field.
