Prep roundup: Carson runners compete in league meet

SPARKS — The Carson girls placed fourth at Friday’s Sierra League championship at the Lazy 5 Regional Park.

Damonte Ranch won the meet with 33 points followed by Bishop Manogue at 59, Douglas at 90 and Carson 99. Galena was fith with 103 and Wooster was last at 137.

Junior Rheanna Jackson led Carson with a time of 20-minutes 59-seconds whch was good for 13th place. Freshman Gabrielle Fernandez was 17th at 21:14, Blanca Sosa was 18th at 21:15, Mikaela Bigley was 24th at 21:49 and Jaidyn Shepard was 27th in 22:02. Jiavanna Wong-Fortunato and Chloe Hataway were 46th and 48th, respectively. Kathryn Liemandt placed 51st and Ava Covington was 52nd.

On the boys side, Galena edged Douglas by a single point, 40-41. Damonte Ranch was third at 71, Bishop Manogue was fourth at 101, Carson was next at 131 and Wooster was last at 152.

Douglas’ John Munyan won the boys race in 16:16.

Freshman Zach Sever was Carson’s top finisher, running an 18:19 for 19th place. Senior Logan Mead was nine seconds behind at 18:28 for 20th place, sophomore Ethan Byasse was 31st in 19:05, sophomore Adan Garcia was 36th in 19:32 and junior Jason Legott was 38th in 19:35. Adam Flaten was 40th, Jared Cartier was 43rd and Robert Bush was 49th.

Dayton swept by Truckee

TRUCKEE — The Wolverines posted a 25-19, 25-20 and 25-23 win over the Dust Devils Friday night in a 3A match.

Dayton dropped to 10-4 with matches at Sparks Tuesday and against Fallon at home Wednesday.

“The team played hard,” Dayton coach Monica Halvorsen. “They worked really well defensively to stop Truckee’s top hitter. We were always in striking distance to pull out a win, but Truckee is so disciplined, they made us work hard for each point. We were pretty evenly matched the whole time.

“Minor mistakes and not communicating consistently brought us another loss. I’m proud of my team. They didn’t hang their heads.”

Ashley Mason had seven kills and two digs, Brianda Diaz finished with six kills and 10 digs and Hailey Wells contributed 19 digs. Makenna Olsen had nine kills, two blocks and three digs, whle Kallie Strong had seven digs and 26 assists. Kassie Strong had five kills and three blocks.

Dust Devils, White Pine tie

ELY — The Dust Devils and White Pine battled to a 2-all tie in a 3A boys soccer match Friday afternoon.

Jacob Duran gave the Dust Devils a 1-0 lead and White Pine tied it 15 minutes later.

White Pine went ahead on a controversial goal. Dayton coach Luis Melgarejo felt it was a clear offsides. Jorddy Diaz tied it up 10 minutes later on an assist from Duran.

Dayton plays at West Wendover today. Dayton is 5-1-2.
