Busy week ahead in Carson

There’s definitely no time to rest this week in Carson City.

Tigers, Mark Twain, Batman, Dr. Frank-N-Furter and more will all be in Carson City this week; and that doesn’t even include the Halloween costumes.

The week starts with rivalry week as Carson and Douglas high schools face off.

The Carson girls soccer team plays at Douglas at 3:15 p.m. today. The boys soccer teams will battle at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the girls volleyball team plays at Douglas at 3:45 p.m. The football teams will play at 7 p.m. Thursday at Carson High School.

Downtown celebration planned Friday

The businesses in downtown Carson City are coming together to throw a party to celebrate the completion of the construction in the downtown corridor.

“It just seems appropriate to celebrate the downtown street project,” said Mike Riggs, president of the Downtown Business Association. “What better way than to provide an opportunity for the businesses that have been struggling through the construction process? What better way to introduce it to the citizens of Carson City, and those outside of the city, to come check it out the day before the Nevada Day Parade? Being the voice of the downtown businesses, we are the right organization to put this on.”

The street’s open house will begin noon Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in front of the Capitol. Bands will be playing at Arlington Square, the Bike Smith and McFadden Plaza.

Muscle Powered, the organization dedicated to creating a walkable and bikeable city, will be hosting activities on the north end. Advocates to End Domestic Violence will have a beer garden in Arlington Square. Food for Thought will team up with the Brewery Arts Center to put on a family fun center inside the vacant brewery building.

“Fortunately, we’ve had several businesses pitch in to help put on the event,” Riggs. said. “None of this is taxpayer money.”

Participants can pick up a passport booklet from any participating business to be stamped by each one they enter. For every stamp they get, they will receive a raffle ticket. Businesses that are members of the Downtown Business Association are worth two stamps.

Booklets will be collected at the Downtown Business Association’s booth in Arlington Square, where the drawing will take place 5:30-6 p.m.

Prizes include a $1,000 diamond necklace from Carson Jewelry and Loan, five beach cruisers from Bike Smith, along with many others.

“This open house will help to showcase our local, small businesses,” Riggs said. “That, in turn, helps our economy.”

Riggs encouraged participants to stay downtown after the open house for either the Blinky Man ride 6:30 p.m. starting in McFadden Plaza or “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” at 8 p.m. in the Brewery Arts Center.

He said the downtown project, which included the narrowing of Carson Street and widening of sidewalks, should help the overall atmosphere.

“Downtown Carson City has always been a gathering place for our locals to get together on a Friday night or Saturday,” he said. “This should expand that to make it a fun, easy-to-get-to place to shop, have a bite to eat or visit local pubs any time of the day or day of the week.”

MUSEUM CELEBRATES 75 years

The public is invited to the 75th birthday bash of Nevada State Museum on Friday Oct. 28.

This day of honor is filled with special events from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free.

The museum is a local historical marker within itself. The building opened its operations in the 19th century as the U.S. Mint. On Oct. 31, 1941, the museum was renewed thanks to Judge Clark Guild, who raised community and financial support to make it possible.

During this event, the historic Coin Press No. 1 will create special medallions – some made of Nevada silver – for sale along with T-shirts in the museum store.

Other activities include a ceremonious cutting of a cake designed and prepared by Carson High School’s culinary students and behind the scenes tours to give a peek at collections not normally on display. Raffles will be held throughout the day, and special guest McAvoy Layne will appear as Mark Twain. Boy and Girl Scout guides and fun activities for families and children will make the day historical fun.

Old-fashioned Halloween fun is planned from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 29 at Fort Churchill State Historic Park in Silver Springs. The family-friendly event will feature activities including harvest games on the museum lawn, a scavenger hunt around the fort ruins and pumpkin carving and scarecrow building contest. Bring your own pumpkin carving tools and clothing to dress your scarecrow. Pumpkin carving and scarecrow building will be available starting at 4 and judging will take place at 6 p.m. All other activities will be available from 4 to 7 p.m. while supplies last. Virginia City is the site of a monthlong “Hauntober” celebration, a ghostly celebration culminating on Oct. 31. Events include Ghost Walk Tours by Bats in the Belfry 6-8 p.m. Oct. 27-30 at locations around Virginia City. Costumed goblins will march down Virginia City’s C Street at 5 p.m. Oct. 31. Entry is free and sign ups begin at 3 p.m. at the Virginia City Jerky Company, 204 S. C St. Following the Goblin Parade, safe trick-or-treating will take place until 8 p.m. A costume contest also is planned at 4:30 p.m. at the Virginia City Jerky Company; sign up at 3 p.m. at the same place.

A night walk of the Silver Terrace Cemetery in Virginia City is planned from 6 to 11 p.m. Oct. 31. The cemetery opens after dark only once a year, on Halloween night, for a walk among the graves on the spookiest night of the year.

Carson City Library will be offering spooky crafts, games and a costume contest from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26 in the Digitorium, 900 N. Roop St. The library will be open to trick-or-treaters from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Halloween.

Carson Tahoe Health’s annual Spooktacular celebration from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 27 offers trick-or-treating, a bounce house, booths, and displays of fire trucks, ambulances and a CareFlight helicopter. The free event takes place in the north parking lot at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center.

The Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada’s Safe Halloween Celebration is from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 30. The event, at 813 N. Carson St., includes trick-or-treating and Halloween crafts for $5 per child. Call 775-884-2226 for more information.

A free Halloween party to benefit veterans in need from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30 at Veterans Healing Camp, 1775 E. Highway 50, Silver Springs. The event includes games, hayrides, a costume contest, live music by Randy Ide and food and drinks. Bring a carved pumpkin to enter into the pumpkin contest, and dress up for the costume contest.
