Students thinking about long-term goals at Pioneer High School

Students at Pioneer High School have a unique opportunity to participate in a personal development class known as JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates).

A grant funded program with more than 30 years of success, JAG is dedicated to increasing graduation rates and to providing students a plan after graduation with college and career readiness. PHS is the only place in Carson City School District that offers this program.

Participants will acquire many important skills over the course of the school year, including resume building, interview simulation, and effectively setting goals. There will be many opportunities for students to develop leadership skills, and learn how to be a part of a team. Despite all of those benefits for students, there may be no activity to participate that’s more important than thinking about their future.

Guest speakers from all walks of life will come to talk to students about the many career paths available to them. A representative from an automotive technical institute came to discuss their many programs, and two students have already scheduled home visits to get more information about registering.

A fellow student at Pioneer is coming to guest speak about her experiences with the Civil Air Patrol, and already has a career path laid out.

Many more guest speakers are scheduled to visit JAG classes, as well as field trips that include local colleges and public service locations.

Their success will be through combined effort and determination, but allowing them to dream and plan for the future might be the greatest practice of all.
