Carson boys soccer knocks off South Tahoe

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it and that’s the theory Carson boys soccer coach Frank Martinez is going by.

Osvaldo Gomez, a top defensive player for Carson, has been the star offensively so far for the Senators. He scored his third goal in the second game of the season as Carson won a nonleague game 2-1 at South Tahoe Friday.

“We’re going to keep him up there,” said Martinez about continuing to use Gomez on offense.

Martinez also used starting goalie Efren Ramirez on offense and the move paid off as Ramirez scored the tiebreaking goal 10 minutes into the second half for the margin of victory. Martinez said with a solid backup goalie in Jose Rodriguez — who played the entire game in goal against South Tahoe, that gives him the option to play Ramirez in the field. “Efren is very good in the field also,” Martinez said.

Gomez scored seven minutes into the game on assist from Alex Gonzalez. Ramirez scored on an assist from Trinity Ramirez.

Martinez said South Tahoe’s goal came on a mistake. “That was the only good shot they had,” he said.

Otherwise defenders Peter Garrett, Raul Lopez, Christian Martinez and Isael Lopez had an outstanding game.

Martinez said his team had a huge shot advantage over Tahoe. “Their goalie saved a ton,” he said. “We had a lot of shots. Their goalie came up very big.”

Overall, Martinez said he was pleased with his team. “Everybody looked pretty good,” he said.
