150 Years Ago

Alpha and Omega: A man entered the Baptist Church in Carson City, walking up to the pulpit and demanding the Bible of the minister, stating that he was going to preach. One of the gentlemen present went forward to put the intruder out and he started toward the door, shouting at the top of his voice, “Alpha and Omega!” alluding to the beginning and end of his ministry. The ladies of the congregation were frightened by the man who was probably insane. (Nevada Transcript)

Burning shame: A Reno woman was walking along the street when she became aware that her bustle was burning. She turned her back toward a large show window and made a grab for the smoke from her bustle. From it she brought out a purse, a small package of dry goods, a box of candy, a pair of baby socks, a novel, half a dozen papers of pins, a pamphlet on dress reform and the flaming remains of the weekly Reno Journal. By this time quite a crowd had gathered to help her stamp out the fire. A pitcher of ice water thrown by Bob Fulton subdued the conflagration, and then she replenished her wardrobe from a neighboring store.

All sorts: The telephone poles on Carson street are getting a coat of green paint that greatly improves their looks.

Veterans housing: Thirty-three ex-servicemen and their families will be moved into the veteran housing project in the Valley Park addition of Carson City. Veterans and their families who moved in included Charles Shawhan, Arthur A. Tranjack, James Pomeroy, T. J. Peterson, W. M. Morgan, James McPherson, E. W. Wood and Jewell Green.

Serenading a mountain lion: An injured flyer, Leonard Cann of the Civil Air Patrol, kept a mountain lion away by singing songs and shouting “Shalom” which means peace in Hebrew. Cann’s Civil Air Patrol plane went down in the mountains seven miles southeast of Kyburz.
