Community Spotlight: Young Wildcats off to good start after two tournaments

The newly formed Nevada Wildcats 12U softball squad is off to a 6-5 start after two fall tournaments.

The Wildcats went 2-1 over the weekend, beating Fallon, 9-5, and the Nevada Lightning, 8-2, at Carson High School. The only loss was 13-12 to the Nevada Stealth.

Kennedy Radican went 4-for-6 and Cori Doran went 5-for-7 to lead the offense. Neva Adams and Shannon Von Duering picked up the pitching wins.

Previously, the Wildcats went 4-4 at a tournament in Roseville, Calif. The Wildcats were blanked three times during the tournament, all three losses coming to tournament champion Firecrackers from California. The other five games the Wildcats averaged 10 runs per contest.

K.K. Shirley had eight hits in the tourney, while Radican added six, Lia Huntington five and Shaylee Coldwell and Adams added four each.

Ottos place in bike

series at Northstar

Molly Otto won first place and twin sister, Mallory, took third place at the recently concluded Northstar Downhill Mountain Bike Series.

Riders descend from 8,014 feet on a steep downhill single-track course. Riders start at 40-second intervals, typically taking between two and five minutes to complete the double-diamond track. Riders have to travel through tough terrain, including downed trees and boulders.

The twins will now start to compete in southern California and Las Vegas series’ of downhill mountain biking.

Sparman wins top

flight at CVGC

Jack Sparman shot a net 62 to win Flight A at the Carson Valley Men’s Club President’s Cup.

Roger Hala was second at 65 and Jeff Schreiber was third with a 66. Charles Poe won Flight B with a 63 followed by Ron Fukuyama (65) and Joe Morrison (66), who were second and third, respectively. John Carey won Flight C with a 65, three shots better than Neil Bain and five clear of Bruce Sanford.

Pluth foursome wins

at Empire Ranch

Bob Pluth, Dan Rogers, Brick Ludington and Wade Walker shot a net 114 to win the four-man two best-ball tournament on Aug. 31.

Paul Lockwood, Tom Harlow, Ray Huntley and Joe Gibson were a stroke behind at 115. David Knighton, Mala Chizek, Bob Del Carlo and Skip Yokota won Flight B with a 114, one stroke ahead of Bruce Serpa, Bob Pitcock and Carl Slate.

MORAGA — Madison Morrell had 21 kills, three assists and 16 digs to lead Nevada past Saint Mary’s 25-22, 27-25, 16-25 and 25-20 over the weekend en route to winning the tournament title with a perfect 3-0 record.

Nevada is now 4-2 on the season.

Former Dayton standout Madison Foley had five kills, five digs and four assists.
