Prep roundup: Carson volleyball able to hold on vs. Reno

RENO — Carson High opened its Northern Nevada 4A season with a 25-22, 22-25, 25-14 and 26-24 win over Reno Tuesday night.

Carson (7-1, 1-0) hosts Spanish Springs Thursday at 5 p.m.

“It was a lot closer than I wanted it to be,” said CHS coach Robert Maw. “We struggled passing (early). Abby Pradere set last week when Natalie was gone and she set all summer for her club team, so this was her first competition at libero since last season.

“We started to step up in the third game (.314 hitting percentage) and ran tempo which Reno didn’t handle. Reno stepped it up the fourth game and we had some minor errors, but we came out all right.”

Carson hit .250 as a team. Jaycie Roberts led the way with 14 kills, while Keelin Pilgrim added nine. Dajarrah Navarro had six kills and Maya Vasquez five.

“Maya played well tonight,” Maw said.

Pradere had four digs and Natalie Anderson three to go along with 37 assists. Vasquez had eight blocks while Ari Schmidt, Navarro, Anderson and Roberts added four each.

Dayton wins in 3

DAYTON — Dayton swept Lovelock 30-28, 25-19, 25-18.

“We started off slow but we finished strong and consistent,” Dayton coach Monica Halverson said.

Makenna Olsen had three blocks, seven kills and one ace, Ashley Mason had one block, five kills and one ace, Brianda Diaz had 13 assists, five kills and one ace, Rebecca Mason had five kills, one ace and two blocks and Hailey Wells played well at libero for the Dust Devils.

Carson finishes third

Carson High took third at the weekly Sierra League tourney held at Eagle Valley’s East course on Tuesday.

Bishop Manogue won with a 355 followed by Wooster at 407, Carson at 413, Damonte 417 and Galena at 438. Jessica Stanton was medalist with an 80.

Jill Beglin led Carson with an 82 followed by Angelika Morrison at 103, Camryn Aten 108, Aly Perry 120 and Jessika Montes 149.

“We moved up one spot from last week so that was a definite positive,” CHS coach Wade Greenlee said. “Even though Eagle Valley is easier than Toiyabe, it’s actually longer and I was impressed that each girl improved their score which is important for overall cup points.

“Jill closed the gap between her and Jessica Stanton from Wooster, and both girls are showing they are the ones to beat. We got off the tee better today, but still have a lot of work to do in scoring. That will come with more work around the green.”

Carson returns to action Sept. 15 at Wolf Run.

TENNIS

Carson boys, girls win

The Senators improved to 3-1 with an easy 14-4 win over Hug Tuesday afternoon at Carson.

Carson used its reserves exclusively, and Hug fielded just four players.

Trevor Dawley, Karsten Thiele, Eric Tomita and Dominic Goodner all registered wins in singles.

• The Carson girls won by forfeit, 18-0. CHS is now 3-1, too.

Douglas girls upset

The Tigers fell for the first time in two years, dropping a tough 10-8 decision to Reed on Tuesday.

Four of the sets Douglas lost were by 4-6 scores.

Kylie Coziahr won 6-1, 6-3 and 6-2. Maggie Rich and Kari Coziahr each went 2-1 in singles. Douglas’ other win came from Kelsey Carlson and Shelby Casaus, who won 7-5.

Reed won the other eight doubles sets.
