On Sunday morning, Carson City will host its annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony, commemorating the 15th anniversary of the terror attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C.

The ceremony will be held at the World Trade Center I-Beam Memorial in Mills Park to remember the emergency service personnel and thousands of innocent men, women and children who were killed 15 years ago.

“Each year we gather together to remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001. This year will mark the 15th year since the worst terrorist attack on American soil,” said Carson City Fire Chief Bob Schreihans. “We remember the pain and anguish inflicted upon thousands of innocent victims and their families. But, we also remember the courage and dedication of thousands of police and firefighters who rushed into burning buildings to save lives and rescue their friends and neighbors.”

The ceremony will be centered on the theme “To remember what happened, to never forget and to recognize first responders.”

Sheriff Ken Furlong said this is the most important part, to remember those who were heroes in the attacks.

“There were so many heroes that passed that day that were civilians, law enforcement and firefighters,” Furlong said. “So many passed and it is their actions that give great reason to remember.”

Though the tragedies of that day occurred an entire country away from the Nevada capital, it’s a unifying event, and every capital should have a memorial for it, Furlong said.

“It is important to have this event still because we are a state capital that cherishes that memorial,” Furlong said. “It would be wonderful if every capital held displays or something they could look at to represent those workers and first responders. What happened needs to be memorialized all over this country.“

The ceremony Sunday will include the presentation of the colors, flag lowering, ceremonial bell ringing, moment of silence, taps, and prayer for those who died in the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and on Flight 93. Furlong, Deputy Fire Chief Bob Charles, Mayor Bob Crowell and Congressman Mark Amodei are expected to speak at the event.

The World Trade Center I-Beam Memorial is located in the grassy area near the Marv Teixeira Pavilion at the east end of Mills Park. The ceremony will be held at 8:15 a.m.
