Carson City Soroptimist announced the top golfers in its annual Stroke to Help tournament held Aug. 27 at Silver Oak Golf Course.
The women’s team, Karen Hoppe, Darcy Johnson, Robin Ponte, and Kathy Streeter, tied for top honors with the men’s team, Paul McIlwee, Rob Brehm, Bill Hammons, and Robbie Janas, with both teams scoring a 49 in the scramble-format tournament.
Susan Brown, Nate Brown, Nick Brown, and Carl Wander took top mixed team honors, with a score of 61. Tradition for the tournament, which raises funds for breast cancer screenings, also includes the Boobie Prize, awarded to the last place team. This year, Ruthann Wagner, Nancy Mortensen, Betty Messier, and Clare Devencenzi, took that honor with a still-respectable score of 75.
In the on-course contests, MaryAnn Bailey had the Women’s Straightest Drive, and Matthew Wood the Men’s Longest Drive. In the Men’s Closest to the Hole Contest, Todd Estes and Carl Wander tied, each with shots landing three feet, six inches from the hole. Estes won the subsequent tie-breaker. Karen Hoppe took the Women’s prize, with a tee shot landing one foot and nine inches from the pin. The Hole-in-One prizes, a new car donated by Michael Hohl Automotive and $10,000 cash donated by Carson City Toyota, remained unclaimed.
The Stroke to Help, with corporate sponsors Greater Nevada Credit Union, Carson Tahoe Health System, and Tahoe Carson Radiology, is currently Carson City Soroptimist’s only fundraiser. Funds raised pay for breast cancer screenings for local under-insured women, grant funding to non-profit organizations that aid women and girls, and educational scholarships for women. Next year’s Stroke to Help will be Sept. 23 at the Silver Oak Golf Course.
