Carson City School District updating five-year strategic plan

The Carson City School District is looking for community input to update its five-year strategic plan.

The district will hold a series of town hall-like meetings in order to gain community insight to review the district’s strategic plan. The purpose of the strategic plan is to create partnerships with the community to make the most out of each day for each student by empowering them with skills, knowledge, values and opportunities to thrive.

These meetings are meant to have the community come together to report on how the district has done with their goals outlined in the current strategic plan, which is meant to help determine how to best empower the students for success, said CCSD Superintendent Richard Stokes.

“We are hoping for a broad cross section of the community will attend and participate in small group work to review the goals in our current strategic plan and provide thinking for where we should go for the next five years,” said Stokes.

There are five main goals addressed in the strategic plan: Community and full partnership to bring together the students and local businesses and residents to assist in real world learning; engaged parents and guardians to help make the adults comfortable with the schools to provide academic success outside of the classroom; healthy generations of students to focus on good mental and physical health of the students so they can learn successfully; a curriculum that matters to make sure the district is providing the best tools and skills for post secondary life; and an extraordinary staff to be successful.

Each of these goals will be reviewed in order to determine what needs to be updated or changed for the district.

“This strategic plan represents the educational needs and expectations of the community and we want to make sure we provide the type of schools our patrons expect,” Stokes said. “We want to give a basis to develop a program to make educational decisions so we are doing the type of work the community expects and it is helpful to have a document to make decisions in the school district.”

There will be four meetings total, to discuss this plan. The meetings will be held Sept. 15, Sept. 29, Oct. 20 and Nov. 17 all from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Carson Middle School cafeteria.

Stokes said they are hoping to have a rough draft to present to the School Board trustees at the meeting on Dec. 13. If it is approved, when 2017 starts, the district will have an updated version of the plan.
