Prep roundup: Dayton spikers subdue Fernley in four games

DAYTON — Dayton spotted rival Fernley a game, and then roared back to win three straight Wednesday night to stay unbeaten in 3A play.

The Dust Devils dropped the opener 25-27, but won 25-17, 25-17 and 25-15.

“They (Fernley) came out strong,” Dayton coach Monica Halveson. “We played against Fernley a lot over the summer. They are getting better. They are a very scrappy team.

“We passed very well and our big girls (up front) had some great hits. Hailey (Wells) played well at libero. She was all over the place.”

Ashley Mason led the way with 11 kills and 10 digs. She hit at a .308 clip. Kassie Strong had a nice night at the net with eight kills (.300) and three blocks. Makenna Olsen finished with seven kills (.222) and six digs. Rebecca Mason contributed five kills and seven digs. Grace Wells had three kills and five digs, Wells had three kills, three assists and 25 digs. Kallie Strong had 32 assists and seven digs.

Dayton played without Brianda Diaz, who’s arguably Dayton’s best player.

Dayton visits Lowry at noon Saturday.

VC girls lose thriller

SMITH — The Muckers opened the season with a 29-31, 25-23, 25-21, 20-25 and 15-17 loss to Smith Valley Tuesday night in the Division I opener.

Kaitlin Hames had 10 ace and six kills, Kim Tlapa had 18 digs and an ace and Chelsea Nevin had four digs, 16 assists, 12 kills and an ace.

In JV action, Smith Valley won 25-19 and 25-9.

Carson stays undefeated

RENO — The Senators improved to 5-0 with a narrow 1-0 win over Hug Wednesday night at Rollins Stallworth Stadium.

Carson played much of the game without midfelder Osvaldo Gomez (ankle) and the entire game without defender Christian Martinez (ankle). Coach Frank Martinez was unsure of Gomez’s status for Saturday’s home against North Valleys at 10:45 a.m.

“Hug played us very well,” Martinez said. “We outshot them. Their keeper was very good. He stopped at least three goals in the first half. Hug only got a few shots off against us. The defense was solid.”

The game’s only goal came from Oscar Ventura who scored midway through the first half.

Carson has outscored opponents 13-3 thus far.

In JV action, Hug grabbed a 2-1 victory.

Dayton. Yerington tie

YERINGTON — Freshman Keerat Bhullar scored in the 20th minute in the Dust Devils’ 1-1 tie with Yerington in a 3A boys soccer match on Wednesday.

The tie gives Dayton a 5-2-1 overall record and 1-0-1 in league.

The game was scoreless when Bhullar knocked in a rebound off a missed shot. Yerington tied the game approximately 10 minutes later.

Victor Gomez and Isaac Guadarrama played well in the midfield and Jacob Duran and Jon Torres played well on the back line.

The Dust Devils played without four players, including two starters, for academic issues. They’re expected back for next Wednesday’s match at Fernley.

“We played all right,” coach Luis Melgarejo said. “We were a little sloppy, but we played hard. Because we had some guys missing, we had to move people around.”
