Prep roundup: Carson VB rolls to win against Hug

RENO — Carson High served up 16 aces and got 18 kills from Jaycie Roberts en route to an easy 25-13, 25-3 and 25-7 win over Hug in a 4A crossover volleyball match.

Carson improved to 3-1 in league and 8-2 overall.

Coach Robert Maw went with a 6-2 offense (using both Abby Pradere and Natalie Anderson as setters) in the first game before going with a 5-1 in the last two games.

“We had a lot of unforced errors and a lack of focus in the first game,” Maw said. “Natalie set in the second game and did a good job. Abby set in the third game. Abby Paulson did a nice job at libero.

“Jaycie had a good night. She has to adjust to each setter, but she settled down. Natalie sets a little quicker and Abby sets a little slower and a touch higher.”

Maya Vasquez finished with four kills and Shea DeJoseph had three. Ari Schmidt served up four aces and Anderson had three, Ku’ulei Haupu had three blocks. Pradere finished with 15 assists and Anderson had 12.

The Senators return home for four straight matches over the next two weeks, including a showdown next Thursday against McQueen, one of the top teams in the High Desert division.

“We’re looking forward to coming home with our crowd,” Maw said. “North Valleys is kind of like Hug. We need to get ready for McQueen. They are a good team.”

Carson boys rolling

The Senators, 6-1, won eight of nine doubles matches en route to a 12-6 win over Galena Thursday at Carson.

The tandem of Taylor Saarem and Jayson Artz went 3-0, losing just one game. Nico Salm and Danny Dudley also went 3-0, dropping just eight games in three sets. Alek Henricksen and Stu McElhany went 2-1, winning 6-4 and 6-1 following a 7-5 loss.

In singles, Ryan Tomita went 2-1, winning 6-0 and 6-0 after starting the day on the short end of a 6-0 score, Jared Barnard and Bradley Wiggins each went 1-2.

CHS girls top Galena

RENO — The Senators rolled to a 10-2 lead after two rounds en route to an 11-7 win over the Grizzlies.

Emma Breeding and Anya Woodbury, Mikaela Asby and Nancy Henricksen, and Emily McCaskill and Amanda Schulz all went 2-0 before retiring for the day. Becca Trejo went 2-1 in singles while Shaylin Segura, Elise Brady and Eleanor Sturm all posted one win in singles.

GOLF

Beglin shines for CHS

RENO — Jill Beglin shot a respectable 81 to win medalist honors at the weekly Sierra League Invitational held Thursday afternoon at Wolf Run Golf Club.

The overall news wasn’t good for Carson, however, which finished fifth with a 446.

Angelika Morrison shot 110, Camryn Aten 117 and Aly Perry 138.

Manogue, led by Kallie Grady’s 83, won the tourney with a 391. Galena was second with 396. Wooster was third at 429 and Damonte Ranch was fourth at 442.

“Jill played well and got her first victory,” coach Wade Greenlee said. “She continues to improve and lead the team. Angelika played well and kept us close. Fifth place isn’t OK, but there is a lot of golf left.

“We’re going to need Camryn and Aly to go lower next week at Genoa. Jesika continues to grind away and improve even though her score doesn’t show it. It was a hard course and a long day. I’m happy with their effort.”

Dayton tops Yerington

DAYTON — The Dust Devils, thanks to a goal and assist apiece from Alaura Greenwalt and Kristina Mason, knocked off the Lions 5-1 Wednesday in a 3A match.
