Prep roundup: Mead, JV runners strong

Logan Mead was the top runner for the Carson High boys cross country team at Friday’s Sierra League meet at Reno’s Bartley Ranch Regional Park, finishing 12th.

Mead covered the 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes, 5.80 seconds. Carson finished fifth as a team with 125 points behind Douglas (34), Galena (43), Damonte Ranch (54) and Manogue (120).

Also for Carson, Chris Berggren was 20th in 20:56.66, Adam Flaten was 32nd in 21:28.08, Jason Leggett was 33rd in 21:28.87 and Harry Meyer was 38th in 22:51.20.

Carson’s junior varsity runners had a strong meet. Both CHS JV boys and girls had three runners in the top 10. Carson’s JV girls were edged out for first, finishing second to Douglas by one point.

Carson swept the JV titles. Gabby Lopez won the girls race and Hunter Rauh won the boys race. Also for Carson’s JV girls, Jaidyn Shephard took fourth and Ava Covington was ninth.

For Carson’s JV boys, freshman Zachary Sever was fifth and Ethan Byasse was seventh. Carson’s JV boys were also missing their top runner, freshman Anthony Ramirez.

“He would have made us really competitive,” Carson coach Pete Sinnott said.

Rheanna Jackson was the top runner for Carson’s girls in 22;51.33. Also for Carson, Makaela Bigley was 21st in 22:58.59 and Blanca Sosa was 29th in 24:08.72. Also for CHS, Katy Liemandt was 37th and Jia Wong-Fortunato was 38th.

Dayton boys second

In a meet it hosted, Dayton took second out of 10 teams on a 3.2-mile course. Fernley edged out Dayton for the title by six points.

Five Dayton runners placed in the top 20 out of 84 runners in the race. J.J. Ply took third in 18:51, Jason Logan was seventh in 20:16, Austin Duarte was 12th in 21:18, Madsen Evans was 14th in 21;25 and Jared Logan took 20th in 21;54.

We had a home meet today. The boys varsity took 2nd place out of ten scoring teams on the 3.2 mile course. Fernley beat us by only six points so it was close. We had five runners in the top twenty.

Alex Newsted led Dayton’s girls, finishing 24th in 31:33.

Lancers stop Carson

Carson enjoyed leads of 3-0 and 10-6, but ended up losing 38-17 to McQueen Thursday night at Carson High School.

Evan Vizzusi kicked a 35-yard field goal to give CHS an early lead, and Zach Glanzmann scored on a 36-yard run to give the Senators a 10-6 lead in the second quarter.

Blake Menzel scored Carson’s last TD on a 4-yard run.
