The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: To all those involved in the Honor Flight program that honors our veterans. And to the guardians who accompany the veterans and of course to the veterans themselves. Last week, a group of veterans and those who accompanied them left Reno for Washington, D.C. for a trip they would never forget.
SILVER DOLLAR: On a similar theme, we recognize retiring National Guardsmen PFC Timothy Carr, LTC Wilson Dasilva, Maj. Daniel Thielen, SFC John Ellis, Morris, SFC David Sousa, SSG Aaron Parks and SGT Wilfredo Mercado, who were honored last weekend in Carson City.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City high school seniors Anna Glenn, Rylan Kane and Rachel Rombardo, who were all selected as National Merit Scholar semifinalists. They’re all on their way to being named National Merit Scholar finalists and have the chance to eventually be named Nation Merit Scholars.
SILVER DOLLAR: We normally don’t recognize those on the national level, but we recognize play-by-play announcer Kevin Harlan for his call of a deranged fan who ran onto the field during Monday night’s NFL football game between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers. It was a classic and absolutely hilarious. Need a laugh? Take a listen: https://youtu.be/53GIbJusAAw.
