Prep roundup: Carson girls soccer rolls to win

Carson High, on the strength of four first-half goals, blanked the North Valley girls in soccer, 8-0, Saturday afternoon at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

Carson improved to 5-0 heading into Tuesday’s home match against McQueen at 6:45 p.m.

The Senators got two goals from Yanitzia Perez and one each by Molly Otto, Mallory Otto, Lauren Hudak, Isabella Wakeling and Micah Merriner. Carson’s first score came on an own goal.

Carson outshot North Valleys 28-2, and both North Valleys shots came late in the second half.

For the Senators, it was a walk in the park.

“We try to work on putting patterns together; trying to play our game,” coach Greg Lehman said. “We try to work on fitness. A game like this gives many of our other girls (non starters) an opportunity to play a lot of minutes.”

Carson went to its bench liberally much of the game.

After an own goal in the 10th minute, Hudak made it 2-0 two minutes later and Perez scored her first goal in the 26th minute. Mallory Otto made it 4-0 in the 35th minute thanks to an assist from Hudak.

Perez, Wakeling, Molly Otto and Merriner all scored in the second half.

Boys soccer

North Valley edges CHS

The defending champs got off to a slow start, and paid the price with their first loss of the season, falling 2-1.

“We were just overconfident,” CHS coach Frank Martinez said after the loss dropped CHS to 4-1 in league play and 5-1 overall. “A couple of kids threw in the towel too early, and that is something I will address at practice.

“The second half we looked much better. We only played 40 minutes today, and you have to play 80. North Valleys wanted it more.”

Jon Barrera scored in the 15th minute off a through ball and Eduardo Martinez added a score approximately three minutes later.

Both scores were breakdowns by the defense and a lack of effort getting back to defend. Carson did play without Christian Martinez, who was at a religious retreat.

Guillermo Perez-Morris took himself out of the game for a while, but did return in the second half.

Carson had just two shots on goal in the first half, both by Christian Hernandez.

Carson went to Jose Rodriguez in goal in the second half and moved Efren Ramirez to forward.

Ramirez scored Carson’s only goal on a penalty kick in the 68th minute.

“We put more pressure on in the second half, but we didn’t have a lot of good opportunities,” Martinez said. “Efren is a good option up front when we need goals.”

Carson managed just four shots on goal in addition to Ramirez’s score. North Valleys had six shots on goal.

VOLLEYBALL

Dayton tops Lowry in 4

WINNEMUCCA — With their best player Brianda Diaz sidelined by academic issues, the Dayton Dust Devils needed other players to step up, and they did.

Makenna Olsen and Rebecca Mason contributed 10 kills apiece to lead Dayton to a narrow 26-24, 25-22, 17-25 and 25-23 win over Lowry in a 3A volleyball match on Saturday.

The win gives Dayton a 4-0 mark heading into Wednesday’s showdown against South Tahoe at 6 p.m. in Dayton.

“This was our best match so far,” said DHS coach Monica Halverson. “It was a really good match. Lowry really pushed us. We would have liked to have won in three, but we had some breakdowns in that third game.”

Halverson said Diaz is expected back this week, and Halverson said it was nice to have depth to pick up the slack for Diaz’s absence.

The Dust Devils played a solid defensive game as four players — Ashley Mason (14), Haily Wells (19), Kali Lampshire (12) and Kallie Strong (16) — all had more than 10 digs apiece. Grace Wells chipped in six and Rebecca Mason added five.

Kallie Strong also had 27 assists, four kills and five blocks. Olsen added three blocks to go along with her 10 kills. Ashley Mason also had four kills.

VC beats Hawthorne

HAWTHORNE — Bethany Fuller had nine kills and Kaitlin Hames added seven to lead Virginia City to a 25-16, 25-7 and 25-8 win over Hawthorne Friday night in a Division I match.

Fuller added two aces and four digs, while Hames had two aces and three digs. Chelsea Nevin contributed six kills, 12 assists and four digs, and Emily Heinz had seven aces, 12 assists and three kills.

The Muckers improved to 1-1 in league and 8-2 overall.

The JV squad beat Hawthorne, 2-1.

Sierra Lutheran rolls

Sierra Lutheran rolled to a 78-6 win over Pyramid Lake on Saturday. Cole Contreras rushed for 132 yards and two touchdowns on six carries, Thomas Mellum scored on both of his carries, finishing with 93 yards, Nathan Waite ran for 69 yards and two TDs on three carries, Alex Westre rushed for 70 yards and a score on six carries, Hunter Lamprecht rushed for 30 yards and a TD on three carries and Ryan Salerno threw for two touchdown passes, one to Austin Stone and the other to Waite, for the Falcons.
