Senator Square: Carson High School students rise to the occasion

Something which might not draw a great deal of attention around CHS is the Senior Sunrise, because how many 17-year-olds want to get up even earlier in the morning than they already have to, especially on a Wednesday knowing full well they will not be able to run home first and shower before school begins. That would be crazy, right. However, this is exactly what every single Carson High School senior did on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 6:30 a.m. OK, every senior didn’t head out to the football field bleachers to enjoy some free food, orange juice, and music with some other really cool benefits, but those who did, around two hundred, had an amazing time. Mrs. Ann Britt and her CHS leadership team set up everything from music to orange juice, to bagels, and seniors came out to enjoy the Nevada sun coming up in the east. Many realize this is their final year of high school, and they don’t want to miss even a moment of this memory. Students also voted for the senior song and senior quote; they even discussed the design for a senior shirt. When asked about the CHS Senior Sunrise, Chandler Blueberg said, “The Sunrise was basically just a symbolic indication of what is to come for this our senior year of high school; this is just a glimpse of how bright our future will be.”

WIN $250 WHEN THE COW PLOPS

Win $250? CHS’ Future Farmers of America Chapter is holding its annual fundraiser to help members attend leadership conferences, the state convention, and the national convention. So buy a square, and wait for the cow to plop! Squares are 1 for $5 or 5 for $20, so be sure to buy one before the Homecoming Game on Sept. 30. Come by and see the cow during the second quarter of the game, and even if the cow doesn’t choose a square, there’s still a chance to win $75 in a random drawing. Like to gamble? CHS MOUNTAIN BIKE TEAM

The CHS Mountain Bike Team competed in the Iron Horse Roundup in Hidden Valley, Reno Saturday, Sept. 10. The Senators retain their third place overall team standing as four Senator cyclists reached podium spots at this event. Taylor Jenkins sophomore girls third place, Owen Lieder fifth place freshman boys, Conner McRae third place varsity boys, and Tobin McRae first place (and overall points leader individually) JV boys. Next race will be at Mammoth Calif., in two weeks. Coaches Brent Ruybalid and Gary Casselman are hoping to continue this exciting momentum.

HOMECOMING ELECTIONS

Hey, seniors! Homecoming is approaching quickly, and it’s time to elect candidates. The voting began Sept. 15 and ends Sept. 21 at 2:30 p.m. Go to voting4schools.com and search for Carson High School on the home page. A student’s user name is the student’s ID number, and the password is chsstudent. The 2016 homecoming candidates will be announced on the morning of Sept. 22. So get out there and vote.

CHS DRESS UP DAYS

The dress-up days for Homecoming week are: Move to The West Monday, so come dressed in western wear; Hang-Ten Tuesday, which is a beach 60s theme. Leis will also be on sale in the student store for $1. Way-Out Wednesday is the 70s; it’s time to fill up CHS with tie-dye. Next is Thriller Thursday, which takes CHS back in time to the 80s. Last but not least is 90s wear, on Fresh Prince Friday. Wish Will Smith could be here.

TIME TO DANCE

Senators, it’s that time of year again, and Homecoming tickets will be sold in student finance before school, after school, at lunch, and at nutrition. Tickets sales begin September 26. Monday through Wednesday tickets will be $5 with SBC and $7 without. On Thursday and Friday, tickets will be $7 with SBC and $10 without. At the door, tickets will be $15. Get them early. No bags, outside food or drinks will be allowed inside. Students must have both student ID card and ticket at the door.

SKILLSUSA MEETING

SkillsUSA is having its first club meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at lunch in Ms. Kelley’s room No. 317 in the High Tech Center. All returning members, and anyone interested in joining, are welcome. Please see Ms. Kelley with questions.

CHS DEDICATES FOOTBALL GAME TO ST. JUDE’S HOSPITAL

The CHS football program dedicated the September 16 football game to Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to honor and remember children and families affected by these rare diseases, and to help rally support to give kids with cancer better outcomes by supporting ground-breaking research. September and October are important months for supporting the fight against cancer, and CHS will continue to do that. T-shirts, for sale at games and after, support the cause. All proceeds from the sale of these shirts benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and the Touchdowns against Cancer program CHS has adopted. Shirts are $15. STUDENT OF THE WEEK

Liz Tims is a hard working CHS student, always willing to help and work with other students. She works in an after school special education tutoring program which helps students complete assignments and feel successful. Liz is a great person and a hard worker. She’s involved in school through volleyball and Link Crew and is in many honors classes. CHS and a host of other students thank Liz Tims for all she gives to this school.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

Today’s Senior in the Spotlight shines upon Jesse Lopez. Jesse, an excellent student, is a one-of-a-kind young man, a gentleman who aspires to great things. His GPA is a weighted 4.65 with a cumulative 3.95. Jesse manages to maintain this GPA while carrying a full academic load which includes 4 Advanced Placement classes: Environmental Science, senior English Literature, Government, Calculus BC, and Enrichment. Interestingly, he also has an artistic side and takes Ceramics. Jesse plans on attending UNR and is interested in Engineering. He excels at Mathematics and feels this subject would be a great career interest for him. Jesse is currently on the varsity soccer team at Carson High School, and, in the spring, he plays varsity baseball. In the winter, he works up at Mount Rose Ski Resort as a snowboard instructor; he has been doing this for the last two years, and he enjoys working with all ages and experience levels. A big congratulations goes out to this young man. Carson High School would not be what it is today without students like Jesse Lopez.
