Prep roundup: Carson boys soccer rolls to win

Carson High, thanks to a hat trick by Eddie Porter, finished the crossover portion of its 4A schedule with an easy 7-2 win over McQueen Wednesday night at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

Carson improved to 5-1 in league and 6-1 overall heading into its Sierra League opener at home against Galena Saturday at 10:45 a.m.

“I wish we were 6-0 in league, but I’ll take it (5-1),” CHS coach Frank Martinez said. “We are still moving people around trying to get prepared for Wooster and Galena.

“We started a little sloppy tonight which is why they scored. We had a couple of guys who weren’t playing as hard as they could, and I took them out of the game. We were a little overconfident again.”

The Senators spotted McQueen a goal in the eighth minute when Thomas Frank scored, but after that it was all Carson for the next 55 minutes until the Lancers scored in the 63rd minute when Elijah Akala scored off a direct free kick by a teammate.

In between those two scores by McQueen were four Carson scores, one each by Osvaldo Gomez (14th minute), Danny Manzo (26th minute), Porter (34th minute) and Guillermo Perez-Morris (37th minute).

Perez-Morris, who had a disappointing first half Saturday in the 2-1 loss to North Valleys, gave the Senators a big lift once he entered the game in the first half. He assisted on Porter’s goal and had the aforementioned goal to end the first 40 minutes.

“He is one of the most talented players we have,” Martinez said of Perez-Morris. “He communicates well and controls the midfield. If he’s in the game we’ll do well.”

“He (Perez-Morris) communicates well,” echoed Porter. “He’s always looking to make the best play. He gave me two beautiful passes. The first half we started a little weak, but we played a lot better in the second half.”

After McQueen cut the lead to 4-2 in the 63rd minute, Carson came right back to make it 5-2 when Perez-Morris sent a through ball to Porter, who scored his second goal of the game. Eight minutes later, defender Christian Martinez sent a through ball to Peter Garrett. The McQueen goalie came out too late, and Garrett punched the ball past him to make it 6-2 in the 72nd minute. Porter completed his hat trick and the game’s scoring with a goal in the 78th minute.

Porter’s hat trick was the second one for the Senators. Guillermo Hernandez scored thrice in a 6-1 win over Reed back on Sept. 10.

Porter has always been known as an offensive-minded player. He was probably the best scorer on the JV squad the last couple of seasons. Porter doesn’t play a ton of minutes, but he has four goals and at least one assist this year.

“It’s about making the most of your opportunities, and he put them in tonight,” Martinez said.

“If I’m going to make a run (for a through ball), I want to make it count,” Porter said.

“The first goal I was 1-on-1 with the goalie and put it in.”

Carson used Jose Rodriguez in goal and Efren Ramirez in the field. Ramirez assisted on Gomez’s goal in the first half.

• In JV action, Carson rolled to an easy 7-0 win.

Jose Godinez and Diego Lopez had two goals apiece, and Angel Gonzalez, Ricardo Gonzalez and Kristian Chicas added one apiece.

VOLLEYBALL

Dayton loses to Vikings

DAYTON — South Tahoe knocked off Dayton 25-17, 25-21, 15-25 and 25-18 Wednesday night in a 3A match.

“We played tough but they outplayed us,” Dayton coach Monica Halverson said. “Quick middles to our deep corners caught us off guard. We had good fight, but trailed in every game.”

Makenna Olsen had 10 kills, two aces, three blocks and two digs for Dayton, and Kassie Strong added eight kills, four blocks and a dig. Setter Kallie Strong finished with 28 assists, three blocks and eight digs, and Ashley Mason had 17 digs and two kills. Brianda Diaz finished with seven kills, three aces and nine digs. Kali Lampshire contributed 10 digs and libero Hailey Wells added 18 digs.

The Dust Devils visit Truckee Friday at 6 p.m.
