Carson girls beat Galena; start costs boys

Carson High stayed undefeated in Northern 4A play with a tough 2-1 win over previously undefeated Galena Saturday afternoon at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

Carson improved to 6-0-1, while Galena dropped to 6-1. The Senators host Bishop Manogue Tuesday at 6:45 p.m.

“They are a good team,” Carson coach Greg Lehman said. “We had some opportunities, and we were able to finish a couple.”

Mallory Otto scored for the seventh straight game, tallying in the 43rd minute, and Isabella Wakeling scored in the 50th minute to give Carson a 2-0 lead.

Otto has been the most consistent CHS player in terms of finishing opportunities.

“She stayed composed and picked her spot,” Lehman said.

Galena made it 2-1 in the 57th minute when Camryn Lummus scored off a corner kick.

Carson got six more shots off, but didn’t finish, Galena’s Peyton Kosman fired a rebound shot high in the 72nd minute.

Dayton girls blanked

DAYTON — White Pine rolled to an easy 7-0 win over the Dust Devils on Saturday.

White Pine led 2-0 at the half and then tacked on five second-half goals.

“Our team was excellent in the first half,” coach Jared Miklich said. “The first half was the best I’ve seen them play so far.”

Galena blanks CHS

Another slow start and another loss.

The Grizzlies scored two goals in the first eight minutes and went on to a 4-0 win, the second loss in three games for the defending state champions.

The Senators are 5-2 in league play and 6-2 overall, and they are showing no signs of being anywhere near the team they were last year.

“Galena totally outplayed us,” CHS coach Frank Martinez said. “I don’t mind losing if we play hard, and we didn’t do that today. It’s all about the heart.

“Both of their (early) goals were on breakdowns.”

The attitude and effort changed after scores by Francisco Serrano in the fourth minute and Jorge Medina in the eighth minute.

Carson managed just three first-half shots and five for the game.

The Senators showed a little more energy in the second half, but the results were the same.

Ricardo Martinez scored on a penalty kick in the 49th minute to make it 3-0, and Thomas Cooper scored in extra time when keeper Efren Ramirez didn’t clear the ball.

Angel Gonzalez scored twice to lead Carson to a 4-0 win over Galena in JV action. Ricardo Gonzalez and Ronnie Elliott scored the other CHS goals.

Dayton boys blank White Pine

DAYTON — Victor Gomez and Jacob Duran scored a goal apiece to lead the Dust Devils to a 2-0 win over White Pine n 3A soccer on Saturday.

Both goals came in the opening half, as Dayton improved to 2-0-1 in league play.

Coach Luis Melgarejo praised the defensive play of Marco and Jonathan Torres.

“We really controlled the ball throughout the game,” the Dayton coach said.
