Prep roundup: CHS girls soccer outlasts Miners

Mallory Otto and Yanitzia Perez scored a goal apiece to lead Carson to a 2-0 win over Bishop Manogue in a 4A girls soccer match Tuesday at the Jim Frank Track and Field Complex.

Carson improved to 7-0-1 heading into Saturday’s match at Damonte Ranch.

“We came out and got the win,” said CHS coach Greg Lehman. “It wasn’t our best game by any standard. In a season there are going to be highs and lows. There are still some things we need to work on.

“This game (before Homecoming) is always tough. It’s a tough week. We have some (Homecoming) candidates from the team this year.”

Otto opened the scoring in the 11th minute after Brynn Lehman blasted a shot from 25 yards out that the Manogue keeper was unable to control, and Otto was there to blast home the rebound. She has now scored in every Carson game.

The score remained 1-0 until the 75th minute when Yanitzia Perez, off a pass from Valerie Sue Meyer, scored an insurance goal.

Carson outshot Manogue 12-3.

“They (Manogue) lost a lot of good players,” Lehman said.

TENNIS Carson boys breeze

RENO — The Senators took 11 of the first 12 sets en route to an easy 14-4 win over the Colts. The win gave Carson an 8-2 record.

Taylor Saarem led the singles contingent with a 2-1 record. Nico Salm and Danny Dudley went 2-0, and so did Alec Henricksen and Stu McElhany along with Jayson Artz and Jared Barnard.

CHS girls win big

Shaylin Segura went 3-0 in singles to lead Carson to an easy 14-4 win over visiting Wooster Tuesday afternoon.

Heather Lamotte, playing No. 3 singles, went 2-0 as did Elise Brady. Anya Woodbury and Emma Breeding went 3-0 while the tandems of Emily McCaskill and Amanda Schulz and Mikaela Asby and Nancy Henricksen each went 2-0.

FOOTBALL Sierra Lutheran

falls to 1-3

Excel Christian overpowered Sierra Lutheran 50-9 Saturday in a Division I football game.

Ryan Salerno passed for 57 yards and Cole Contreras ran for 196 and a TD on 31 carries. Nathan Waite caught four passes for 78 yards.

VOLLEYBALL

Muckers win twice

Virginia City rolled past Sparks 25-12, 25-19 and 25-8 in a nonleague volleyball match Monday.

VC is now 11-2 overall and 3-1 in league.

Bethany Fuller had nine kills and seven digs and Kaitlin Hames added six aces, six kills and 10 digs. Chelsea Nevin contributed three aces, six kills, 15 assists and four digs, and Emily Heinz had two aces, five kills, 12 assists and eight digs.

The JV won 2-0 and improved to 8-4 overall.

On Tuesday, the Muckers swept Sierra Lutheran 25-18, 25-21 and 25-13. Heinz had two digs, 13 assists and six kills, while Nevin contributed five digs, 13 assists and seven kills. Kim Tlapa finished with 25 digs.

CROSS COUNTRY

Ply wins 3A race

FERNLEY — J.J. Ply breezed to a win in leading Dayton’s boys cross country team to a third-place finish in Tuesday’s 3A meet.

Ply, who finished about 200 meters ahead of the second-place finisher, was timed in 18:47.

Jason Logan was 11th in 20:34, Austin Duarte was 14th in 21:00, Jared Logan took 39th place in 22:05 and Madsen Evans was 44th in 22:27. Andrew Matthews and Logan Allander were 65th and 71st, respectively.

The Dust Devils are now off until Oct. 7 in Winnemucca.
