Prep roundup: Carson boys soccer rolls past Manogue

Alejandro Gonzalez snapped a five-match goal drought with two scores, as Carson High’s boys soccer team rebounded from an ugly loss to beat Bishop Manogue, 6-1, Wednesday night at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

Carson improved to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in Sierra League play. The Senators return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. at Damonte Ranch.

The goals by Gonzalez were his first since the second match of the season, a 2-1 win over Spanish Springs.

Danny Manzo, Christian Martinez and Oscar Ventura scored a goal apiece. The Senators were the recipients of an own goal.

Gonzalez, who missed most of last season with a back injury, was happy with his contribution.

“It feels good,” he said. “We’re all talking and communicating better.”

“It was good to see Alex step it up tonight,” coach Frank Martinez said. “He’s a tough player. He has the skill to get through three or four players and still get a shot off.”

That’s exactly what he did to score his first goal of the night. Danny Manzo had given Carson a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute, and then Gonzalez twice in the final eight minutes of the half to give the Senators a 3-0 lead at intermission.

“The first goal came off an assist by Eddie Porter. Guillermo Hernandez had the assist on Gonzalez’s second score.

“I saw I had space to get through (their defense) and I took advantage of it,” Gonzalez said. “On the second goal, Guillermo was looking for me and I got to a spot and shot it in.”

Carson had eight other shots, but was turned away.

In the 53rd minute, Carson made it 4-0. Hernandez blasted a shot which the Manogue goalie was unable to control. Christian Martinez, who was celebrating his 17th birthday, blasted a shot into the left corner of the net for his first goal of the season. Ventura made it 5-0 13 minutes later with his second goal of the season. An own goal made it 6-0 before Manogue’s Emmanuel Reyes scored in the 77th minute to avoid a shutout.

The game was a huge improvement over Saturday’s 4-0 loss to Galena.

“We did a good job with our ball movement,” coach Martinez said. “We created a lot of opportunities tonight.”

The Senators showed a lot of patience, and except for a few instances, made the right pass and got rid of the ball when they were supposed to.

“We worked hard on it in practice,” Martinez said. “I’ve been working on getting them do do that.”

• In JV action, Carson grabbed a 6-0 win. Jose Godinez had two goals, while Angel Gonzalez, Ronnie Elliott, Juan Cortez Navarette and Roberto Cazares had a goal apiece.

VOLLEYBALL

Dayton rolls

DAYTON — Dayton rolled to a 25-19, 25-14, 25-15 win over Sparks during Homecoming week.

Dayton coach Monica Halverson said her team was challenged by Sparks’ two middle blockers.

“We didn’t play our best, but we pulled through with the win,” Dayton coach Monica Halverson said.

Kallie Strong had seven kills and 17 assists, Makenna Olsen had 11 kills, Kali Lampshire had 11 assists, Hailey Wells had 14 digs, Rebecca Mason had 13 digs and Kassie Strong added three blocks.

Dayton, 5-2 in league, will host Fallon at 4 p.m. today.

CHS JV loses in 3

Galena knocked off the Senators in three games on Tuesday. Carson evened the match with a win in the second set, but failed to hold a 6-0 lead in the final set.

Audrey Breeding had four kills and two blocks, while Hannah Pembrook had two kills and 10 digs. Camryn Quilling contributed three blocks and Sarah Woods had two kills.

Carson hosts Manogue tonight

The Senators play host to Bishop Manogue today at 6 p.m.

The Senators are coming off a three-set win over Galena on Tuesday night.

Jaycie Roberts had 15 kills against Galena on Tuesday.

GIRLS GOLF

Carson fifth

RENO — Carson was virtually eliminated from making the Northern Region Championships as it placed fifth in the Sierra League Tournament at Arrowcreek. The top four overall teams in the league standings advance to zone. Manogue won the tournament with a 413 and was followed by Galena (428), Wooster (437), Damonte Ranch 448 and Carson (462).

In order for Carson to make zone, it would need to finish at least second in Monday’s final league meet at Sierra Sage and have both Damonte and Wooster finish out of the top four. Carson will have three players who qualify for zone as individuals in Jill Beglen, Camryn Aten and Angelika Morrison.

Jessica Stanton was low score medalist at Arrowcreek, firing an 80 while Beglin rebounded from a subpar performance at Genoa to take second with an 88.

“She worked with assistant coach Rod Butler on a few things this week and it showed,” said CHS coach Wade Greenlee about Beglin.

Also for Carson, Aten shot a 109, Morrison fired a 118 and Jessika Montes added a 147.

“I see improvement every tournament, in terms of overall growth and course management, so I’m extremely proud of how our young team is progressing,” Greenlee said. “Camryn played very well too, and as a senior is finishing strong.”
