Serenade: The Carson Brass Band passed through the streets yesterday playing stirring airs and discoursing excellent music. Besides the Madeira Brothers, we noticed the band had the benefit of the services of Professor York. They gave the Appeal office a musical blast.

Yesterday the sad intelligence came from Reno that Ms. Grace Dowdell, a long time favorite teacher at the public schools, had at last succumbed to a lingering illness and died at the residence of Mr. Beck. Ms. Dowdell spent many years in this city as a teacher in the schools and her demeanor made her a favorite of all the children.

More than 15,000 Nevadans served in the armed forces of the United States from 1940, when selective service was instituted through the year 1946. General White said that in addition to the 14,605 Nevadans in the 18-64 age group required to register for the draft, several others enlisted before reaching registration age.

Ms. Noel Tyler of Stewart was awarded the Soroptimist Foundation Citizenship Award. She was selected from among eight graduating seniors from Carson High School.

Employees who struck Barton Memorial Hospital last year have voted to oust the union that failed to secure a contract for them.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
