Prep Roundup: Ply places second in Arcadia decathlon

ARCADIA, Calif. — Dayton High’s J.J. Ply finished second Saturday in the prestigious Arcadia Invitational decathlon with 6,384 points.

Ply won two events — the 110 high hurdles in 14.94 and the 1500 in 4:21.24. He was second in two other events, the high jump (6-4 3/4) and the javelin (160-3).

The Dayton senior was sixth in the 400 (52.24), seventh in the shot put (38-2), ninth in the long jump (19-7 1/2) and pole vault (11-3 3/4). His lowest scoring events were the discus (12th, 94-1) and the 100 (14th, 12.23).

Carson High’s Abigail Pradere ran in the 800 and was eighth overall (there were three heats) with a time of 2:16.51.

The first lap was run just under 70 seconds, much slower than Pradere liked. The Carson standout took the lead early in the second lap and led until the final 100 meters of the race.

“She ran a great race said,” said CHS assistant coach Steve Pradere. “They went out pretty slow, and Abi had to take it out with about 300 to go. They were shoulder to shoulder in the last 100. She had a great race.”

“I like a faster pace, so you can chase from behind so you can focus on somebody out front,” the younger Pradere said. “I was pretty happy with the race and the time.”

travel to Rocklin

ROCKLIN — Carson took a small contingent of frosh-soph and varsity boys distance runners to Saturday’s Thunder Invitational at Rocklin High School.

The best finish of the group was turned in by Ethan Byasse, who took 10th in the frosh-soph 3200 with a 10:42.73. Trinity Medina was 11th in the 3200 with an 11:05.24 and a 13th in the 1600 with a 4:56.83. Hunter Rauh was 12th in the 800 with a 2:20.97 and he was 17th in the 1600 with a 5:01.14. Freshman Zach Sever was 13th in the 3200 with an 11:10.23 and 20th in the 1600 at 5:04.11.

Jayson Legott was 17th in the varsity 1600 with a 4:56.02. Logan Mead was 19th in 4:58.39 and Adam Flaten was 20th in 4:58.82. In the 3200, Legott was 17th in 10:45.59 and Mead was 18th in 10:51.21.

SWIMMING

Six wins for Carson

Carson High swimmers posted six wins Friday in a four-way meet with Bishop Manogue, North Valleys and Reno.

The Carson boys beat North Valleys 217-13 and the Carson girls won 224-44.

The CHS boys had five overall wins — the 200 and 400 free relay squads, 200 medley relay, Brett Kolb in the 200 free and Alex Gutierrez in the 100 back.

Gutierrez, Bryan Remick, Reese Canfield and Matthew Hill swam a 1:47.38 in the 200 medley relay win. In the 200 free relay win, Remick, Robert Bush, Tyler Crisp and Kolb swam a 1:42.28. Hill, Canfield, Kolb and Gutierrez made up the 400 free team that recorded a 3:27.12.

Kolb swam a 1:52.38 in the 200 free and Gutierrez swam a 58.10 in the 100 back. Kolb was second overall in the 200 IM with a 2:08.25. Canfield took a second overall in the 100 fly (56.28), Remick grabbed a second overall in the 500 free (5:48.33) and Hill took a second overall in the 100 back (1:03.57).

The Carson girls got a win from Nicole Van Geel, who finished with a 1:05.22. Geel also had a second overall in the 100 fly (1:06.80).

Carson girls took a second overall in the 200 free relay, clocking a 1:52.06 thanks to the efforts of Blanca Sosa, Hannah Presley, Christy Krahn and Van Geel.

golf fundraiser

A benefit golf tournament for the Dayton High baseball and softball programs will be held April 23 at 9 a.m. at Dayton Valley Golf Club.

The tournament, which gets underway at 9 a.m., costs $80.
