Carson softball splits DH

RENO — Carson High’s softball team split a make-up doubleheader against McQueen on Monday afternoon.

The game was played Monday because of the Saturday rainout, and the Senators came within an eyelash of sweeping the favored Lancers.

The Senators lost the opener, 3-2, despite a great pitching performance by Jailene Salceido, and then jumped to a quick 5-1 lead in the nightcap and held on for a 7-5 victory.

“The girls played hard all day,” coach Shane Quilling said. “I thought we might be able to get two, but I’m happy we were able to get one.”

Salceido was a big reason why Carson was able to grab the second-game win. She shut out the Lancers over the final four innings to pick up the win, and she went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.

“Jailene threw well,” Quilling said. “Lauren (Lemburg) started and pitched solid, but we made some errors. Jailene came in and finished.”

In the second game, Kailee Luschar walked, stole second and scored on a two-out error. Carson added five more in the second thanks to singles by Lemburg and Teryn Earle, and doubles by Salceido and Bella Kordonowy.

In the opener, Carson grabbed an early 2-1 lead on run-scoring hits by Nicole Brown and Salceido.

In the fourth, Kierra Escalante hit a two-run homer off Salceido to put the Lancers ahead for good.

Luschar went 3-for-3 to lead Carson’s offense.

Lowry sweeps Dayton

DAYTON — The Dust Devils started out poorly and finished strong in a doubleheader against Lowry.

Lowry won the opener, 19-3, in a game called after four innings because of the 10-run rule. The Dust Devils fought hard in the nightcap, dropping a 3-0 decision.

“They played really well in the second game,” coach Dusti Houk said. “To bounce back after being 15 runned in four innings shows the fight in all of them. I was very proud of them. Caleigh (Onstott) pitched very well in the second game. She hit her locations and had her off speed and rise working.”

In the opener, Julie Rogacs drove in all three Dayton runs with a double and triple, and Aleea Howe went 1-for-1 with two runs scored.

Dayton didn’t help itself, making seven errors.

Caleigh Onstott gave up six hits in the nightcap.

Rogacs went 2-for-3 as did Tamia Powell. Howe went 1-for-3.

The teams conclude the three-game series today at noon.

Douglas, Huskies split

MINDEN — Casey Peck and Kettja Bennett connected for back-to-back RBI singles to cap a two-out seventh inning rally that lifted Douglas to a 7-6 win against Reno in game two of a Northern 4A doubleheader on Monday.

Douglas (4-5 league, 6-15 overall) scored twice in the seventh to salvage a split. A three-run fourth inning rally was the difference for Reno (6-3, 9-8) in its 10-7 win in the opener.

The Tigers were down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two when Amanda Hoffman legged out an infield single. Haley Doughty hit a ground ball single up the middle, then the left-hand swinging Peck slapped a 1-2 pitch down the left field line to drive in a run to tie the score at 6-all. Then Bennett hit a soft liner over second base to drive Doughty home with the winning run.

In game one, Anja Weiss pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowed one run to go with nine strikeouts to close out Reno’s win.

Jasmine McNinch drove in five runs as she slammed two homers and a double to lead Douglas offensively.
