150 Years Ago

A large stream of water flowing across Carson Street near the store of Olcovich Bros., making the road almost impassible, was the result of the melting of snow on the foothills yesterday. Here in the valley, in the absence of a breeze, the sun was at midsummer heat.

130 Years Ago

For the last two days the kicking going on in this city in reference to Arbor Day has been terrific. About a thousand people are growling at the Appeal because they did not get a lot of evergreen trees to plant. Each person who did not get a tree holds the editor of the Appeal responsible.

100 Years Ago

Arbor Day was celebrated at Sparks this afternoon when a mile of tree planting along the Lincoln Highway was begun at 1:30 o’clock under the auspices of the Nevada State Federation of Women’s clubs. Over 500 children of the Sparks and Reno schools sang patriotic and Labor Day songs.

70 Years Ago

Eddie Marriage, elder son of State Librarian and Mrs. E.C. Marriage of Carson City, was commended by the Wells Progress for organizing an Easter egg hunt for kiddies of that community on April 6.

50 Years Ago

(Photo caption) 25-pound trout: Bud Rabuska of Tahoe Valley holds the big mackinaw trout he caught recently while trolling near Emerald Bay. A record catch for Rabuska, who has been fishing since 1955, the fish was 37 inches long, weighed 25 pounds and one ounce and had a 26-inch girth.

Bill Wood had noticed the 65 mph signs a few miles back and reset the cruise control on his Dodge sedan. But he hadn’t counted on a tailwind — or the Nevada Highway Patrol trooper who spotted him going 70 mph. The real estate broker was the first in the state — and the country — to get pulled over in a new 65-mph zone.
