Senator Square: CHS news and yearbook editor becomes sports writer

A junior at Carson High School, Isaiah Burrows is a member and editor of The Senator News magazine and Carneta yearbook because of his attraction to and love for writing.

With encouragement from Mrs. Patt Quinn-Davis, his journalism teacher, and because Burrows is passionate about sports, Quinn-Davis read one of his football stories and contacted Carson NOW’s publisher Kirk Caraway to suggest Burrows as a sports writer for the online publication. He got the position and, apparently because of what Carson NOW saw, Burrows has been offered a paid summer internship to continue his reporting and writing.

Burrows says, “It is giving me a huge boost of confidence in my writing, and it is helping me improve as well because I have more writers reading my content, and they are helping me to make it better and different.”

In his work as an editor for the two school publications, Burrows is not one to take credit. He says, “I love how much everyone interacts with one goal in mind, and that is when I see the enthusiasm in everyone’s faces and how they love doing something that is not really ordinary at the school; it is always something new.” Though Burrows loves his position, he says the job is by no means easy. He, along with Carneta’s executive editor, Arianna Schmidt, works long hours before, during, and after school.

He says, “It requires everyone’s full attention in the classroom; we have one goal to accomplish, and there is always something more to do, something missing, and so many aspects of the yearbook go unnoticed, and it requires people to get out of their comfort zones in order to be successful.” Burrows, currently finishing up his junior year, says, “I love the energy at CHS.” Isaiah Burrows, taking his learning to a whole new level.

CHS SPIRIT POSTER CONTEST

Drum roll please! The winner for the CHS S.P.I.R.I.T. poster contest is Carlos Montejano, and the SEL committee congratulated him April 11 with a $25 gift card to Amazon when he joined them for a morning staff meeting. The staff also showcased his winning poster in 24-by-36 scale! CHS is grateful to Montejano for the creation of a poster which highlights Safety, Preparation, Integrity, Respect, Inspiration, and Togetherness.

CTE EMPLOYMENT SPECIALIST

It is time to get a job and think like an entrepreneur with “Entrepreneur Readiness Intensive.” Help with a resume, portfolio, and job interview skills to help acquire employment is found at ERI with its five workshops, countless connections, and new skills. Show prospective employers a certificate recognized by most of Carson City and signed by the mayor. Workshops are in room 163 from 2:45 to 4:30 p.m. starting April 19. Seniors, Academic Award Ceremony is April 26 at 6 p.m. in Senator Square. Please check Edmodo to see whether or not the correct award is listed with the correct name. A list will also be posted on the outside of the CHS Guidance Office. Please notify the guidance office if a mistake is seen.

GNCU CONTEST

In celebration of National Credit Union Youth Month, the Greater Nevada Credit Union branch at CHS is having a contest during the month of April and will be giving away two $100 Visa gift cards! The contest is open to all CHS students. In addition, GNCU will give out $10 gift-of-membership coupons, and students who make a deposit to their account will receive a free gift. Stop by between 7:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to get details and pick up an entry form. Entry deadline is 1 p.m. April 28.

CHIP INCENTIVE PROGRAM

CHS is proud to announce the following Perfect Attendance Award winners for March. The 10 randomly selected winners for February are Christian Miller, grade 10; Carlos Montejano, 11; Aldo Padilla Ochoa, 12 (not pictured); Melissa Perez Barrios, 11; Ian Pettersen, 12 (not pictured); Jane Read, 9; Ryan Riley, 10 (not pictured); Alyssa Sanders, 11; Jasmine Stevenson, 9 (not pictured); Raelin Wilson, 9. Ten students are randomly selected each month from a list of students who have perfect attendance. Each student was awarded a certificate and a gift certificate for the student store at CHS. To be academically successful, good attendance is essential.

HIGH SCHOOL PIC[KS] 2

Carson City Arts Initiative is delighted to present High School Pic[ks] 2 in the Community Development Building, 108 E. Proctor St., with 50 pieces of art by 41 students from four high schools including CHS and Pioneer High School. The free exhibition is available to the public through June 30, and the building is open to the public weekdays. High School Pic[ks] 2 includes a wide variety of art media including ceramics, collage, drawing, painting, and photography. CHS students include: Ashley Britt, Brandon Browning, Ellen Cherpeski, Shelby Kuhlman, Karsen Law, Diana Lobato, Jessica Mathiesen, Destiny Mcgilray, Jasmine Paluch, Kyle Papke, Alexis Paradas, Emily Richardson, John Rupert, and Cheyenne Straw. STUDENT OF THE WEEK

Cleste Ramirez-Munoz is the CHS Student of the Week. She is a senior who works very hard to maintain excellent grades and a great GPA. She is always doing her best to help those around her and herself by applying for many scholarships. She is also a volunteer tutor whose kindness is contagious. The staff and students of CHS are grateful to know Cleste Ramirez-Munoz.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

This week’s Senior in the Spotlight is Camryn Aten. Camryn maintains a 5.1 GPA and is currently taking many Honors and AP classes as well as finishing her requirements for a Career and Technical Education (CTE) diploma in the Veterinary Science pathway. During her four years at CHS, Camryn participated in National Honor Society, varsity golf, and varsity tennis. Outside of school, Camryn volunteers her time at Friends in Service Helping (FISH), the National Humane Society, swim meets, and has made blankets for individuals undergoing chemotherapy. She is also a member of the youth group at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. After Camryn’s ninth grade year, she traveled to Ireland with People to People where she volunteered at a local kids’ camp. Wherever Camryn goes, she gives her best to the people around her. Camryn has been accepted to Loyola University Chicago, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Bard College. She plans to attend Loyola University Chicago, majoring in biomedical engineering. After obtaining her bachelors’ degree, she would like to attend veterinary school. Camryn’s commitment to excellence, along with her desire to help her community, is greatly appreciated. CHS is thankful for her contributions and wishes her all the best.
