The Downtown Neighborhood Improvement District board is seeking bids for cleaning and maintenance of the new downtown sidewalk improvements. The Downtown NID is responsible for landscape maintenance, garbage pickup, general cleaning, and snow removal as needed.
The Downtown NID was formed in 2016 by property owners to give them more control over the funds used for maintenance of downtown improvements. The downtown property owners within the district pay an annual assessment, which is supplemented by Carson City funds. The Downtown NID is a non-profit organization, with its board comprised of seven downtown property owners, including Garrett Lepire.
“This is our first year hiring contractors for the maintenance, so we’re trying to get the word out and see who is interested in the job,” said Lepire. “The board’s hope is to find a local company that will help us keep the downtown looking like the gem it is, year round.”
The Downtown NID assessment is collected by Carson City through property tax bills. The money is passed from the city to the Downtown NID to pay for downtown landscaping and sidewalk cleaning tasks. An item will be on the Board of Supervisors’ agenda on April 20 to initiate the annual assessment for fiscal year 2017-18, beginning July 1, in accordance with the agreement between the Downtown NID and the city.
