A fine day: The threatened storm of night before last did not come. Yesterday was clear, pleasant and of the temperature for comfort. The mountains are covered with snow, which extends down over the foothills through the ravines into the valley. We are otherwise in the midst of summer.

Free papers: It has been the custom of the Appeal for some years to charge 50 cents for old newspapers. On and after this date anyone wanting old newspapers can come to the editorial room and help themselves. This offer is made to get rid of about a ton of exchanges which have accumulated, since we hired Monsieur Clem Berry to clean the office.

Two special trains of all steel cars, the only all-steel show train in the world, will bring Cole Bros.’ World Toured Shows and Trained Wild Animals Exhibition to this city on Friday for two performances. The slogan of this mammoth organization is “Different, Up to Date and Ahead of That.”

Nevada’s state tax commission, which is due for considerable expansion on July 1, probably will find itself quartered in Quonset huts on the Capitol grounds. Every available office is now filled, according to Secretary of State John Koontz.

The beautification plan to transform plain, old Carson Street into a thing of beauty will come before the public at a hearing slated for May 25. For $186,000, Carson City’s downtown area would be shamed from becoming a future “casino row.”

A six-month-old battle by residents for taxational and political independence from Douglas County ended Friday when District Judge Dave Gamble struck down as unconstitutional an 80-year-old law that powered the unsuccessful revolution.
