Prep roundup: Lucky 13 in a row for Dayton baseball

SPARKS — The red-hot Dayton High baseball team ran its winning streak to 13 with 15-0 three-inning win over Sparks in a Northern 3A game Saturday morning.

Dayton leads the standings by two games in the loss column with just a series against Fallon next weekend.

“We got back on track offensively today with a more disciplined approaches at the plate,” coach Mike Burrows said. “We have a huge challenge heading to Fallon next weekend. We are going to need a great week of practice to prepare. Alex Mendez has been almost untouchable for them, and that will be a good test to see where we stack up against one of the better arms in the league.”

Trevor Burrows enjoyed a big game on the mound and at the plate. He went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs, and he tossed a three-hitter with four strikeouts.

Dayton took a 1-0 lead in the first when Burrows was hit by a pitch and scored on a double by Justin Schmidt.

The Dust Devils put it out of reach with five in the second thanks to a double by Burrows, a double by Zach Woitas, a single by Jake Madson, three walks and two hit batsmen. Dayton exploded for nine in the third on just four hits, three hit batters, an error and a walk. Burrows had a double and single in the inning, and Jesse Schmidt and Madson each added a double.

Madson finished with two hits, while Jesse Schmidt, Justin Schmidt and Woitas added one each.

Damonte sweeps Tigers

RENO — Damonte Ranch swept both ends of a doubleheader from Douglas on Saturday, 13-7 and 11-1, to move into sole possession of fourth-place in a tight Northern 4A playoff race.

A four-run rally in the fourth inning lifted Damonte Ranch to a come-from-behind win in game one. The Mustangs scored four runs in the fifth inning to end game two on the 10-run rule.

In game one, Douglas (7-9 league, 10-11 overall) took a 6-3 lead to the bottom of the fourth, only to see Damonte Ranch (10-6, 13-11) come back to take a lead it never relinquished. Michael McDade homered to lead off the rally, then after back-to-back walks, Michael Nicholas singled two runs home to tie the score and dashed home on a passed ball to put the Mustangs on top, 7-6.

Riley Wilkison went 2-for-3 to lead the Tigers’ nine-hit attack. The Tigers received 11 walks in the game, but left nine runners stranded on the bases.

In game two, Jerry Thomas and Zack Jensen both went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Jacob Bercovich went 3-for-3 with two RBI.

Haydn Brown, Haden Keller and Tristan Futch accounted for the Tigers’ three hits.

Dayton sweeps Sparks

SPARKS — Dayton beat Sparks 16-3 in five innings for its first sweep of the season Saturday morning.

Dayton improved to 5-11 entering Friday’s 3 p.m. game at Fallon.

“The girls played well this weekend,” coach Dusti Houk said. “We are seeing the ball well and I hope we can carry that over to the Fallon series.”

Caleigh Onstott allowed just three hits, fanned five and allowed just one earned run.

Dayton took a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run double by Tamia Powell. The Dust Devils added two more in the second thanks to a single by Sydney Anderson, a double by Elizabeth Vincent, an error and a double steal. Dayton added five in the fourth on two-run doubles by Julie Rogacs and Vincent plus a run-scoring single by Marissa Hein.

Vincent went 3-for-4 with a double and Powell went 3-for-3 with a homer, two doubles and four RBI. Rogacs also went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Hein and Shaye Thompson both added two hits.

Manogue sweeps CHS girls

RENO — The Senators managed just seven hits in dropping a doubleheader to Bishop Manogue, 12-2 and 10-0, Saturday afternoon.

In the opener, the Miners snapped a 2-all tie with three in the third, two in the fourth and five in the sixth. The game was shortened to six innings because of the 10-run rule. In the nightcap, Manogue scored in five of its six at-bats en route to a mercy rule win.

Carson scored one in the first on a single by Jailene Salceido, and tacked on one in the third when Bella Kordonowy scored on a wild pitch after hitting a one-out single. Kailee Luschar, Kassidy Cooley, Camryn Quilling, Lauren Lemburg and Camiell Simpson all hit safely in the first game.

In the second game, Salceido and Cooley were the only hitters for CHS, as Hannah Bias fanned two and allowed just two hits.

Bias retired the first 11 she faced before Salceido single. Cooley singled in the fifth, but was stranded. Carson didn’t get a runner into scoring position in the second game.

Damonte Ranch tops DHS twice

RENO — Damonte Ranch swept a Northern 4A doubleheader from Douglas, winning 7-2 and 10-3, Saturday afternoon.

Damonte Ranch came from behind in the opener, as the Mustangs scored three runs in the fifth inning to erase a 2-1 deficit and then added three insurance runs in the sixth. In game two, the Mustangs scored seven runs in the fourth inning to open a 10-0 lead.

Douglas (4-10 league, 6-20 overall) has now lost five games in a row with six still left.

Senior Ally Young, a third-year varsity veteran, earned credit for both wins for Damonte Ranch (9-6 league, 12-9 overall). She pitched the seven-inning distance in the opener, allowed two unearned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks. She came back to pitch five innings in game two. Kaytlin Canner came onto pitch the final two innings and close out game two.

Manogue sweeps Senators

The Senators struggled at the plate in dropping a doubleheader, 10-3 and 11-0, Saturday.

Carson managed just four hits in the 10-3 loss and three hits in the shutout defeat.

Delson Roberts had three of the seven hits, while Josh Ingram, Tim Jones, Devin Elder and Josh Buchan added a hit each.
