Prep Roundup: Carson High girls fall to 0-2

RENO — The season is in its infant stage, but the Carson High girls basketball team is having a lot of trouble scoring points.

Spring Creek jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first four minutes, and coasted to an easy 51-32 win over the Senators on Friday night at the High Sierra Challenge at Reno High School.

Carson, 0-2, plays South Tahoe today at 1:30 p.m.

In two games, Carson has scored just 50 points.

“It took a while to get started,” Carson coach Melissa Laren said. “We did not play as a team. We aren’t running the plays (correctly). We need to box out. We got killed (on the boards).”

Spring Creek outscored Carson, 11-2, in the final 6:06 of the opening half to grab a 26-12 advantage. Jasmine Yadeskie had two buckets and Elizabeth Canning dropped in a 3-point field goal.

The Senators scored the first basket of the third quarter with 6:44 left, but Spring Creek scored 15 of the next 19 points to open up a 41-18 lead before Carson scored a basket and free throw to end the period down 41-21.

Kaitlyn McLeod, Caitlyn Dimick and Teagen Ashby all dropped in 3-pointers to lead the surge. McLeod also added two free throws and Cheyenne Cleveland and Delaynee Walz contributed baskets.

Carson made its only significant surge in the late stages of the fourth quarter, scoring seven straight points to slice the deficit to 49-32 thanks to three free throws by Haley Garver plus baskets by Dajarrah Navarro and Ku’ulei Haupu.

Lauren Lemburg led CHS with seven points, while Abi Golik and Garver added five each.

Dayton loses twice

HAWTHORNE — The Dust Devils opened the season with losses to Mineral County (62-42) and Yerington (70-31) Friday at the Serpent Invitational.

Against Mineral County, Dayton trailed at the half, 31-23, after leading 10-4 early. The Dust Devils got careless with the basketball, and Mineral County turned the mistakes into baskets.

Tamia Powell had 16 points and eight rebounds while Cassie Dickenson had 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Abby Sikora added six points, five assists and four steals and Hannah Coltrin pulled down a team-best 12 rebounds.

“Tamia had a great game today,” coach Kelly Frantz said. “She was aggressive and was all over the floor. I love her mentality and really works hard for the team.”

Yerington led 31-18 at the half, and outscored Dayton, 39-13, in the final two quarters.

Powell had 12 points and seven rebounds and Cassie Dickenson had nine points and four rebounds.

“Cassie and Tamia have been consistent for us points-wise so far and we are going to look to continue to get them the ball as well as try to open some shots up for our other girls,” Frantz said. “We shot well but Yerington seemed to drop every shot they put up, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they were shooting 70 percent or better from the floor tonight. “

SLHS loses at tourney

ROCKLIN — Sierra Lutheran lost its first tournament game to Western Sierra Collegiate Academy, 45-24, Friday night.

“Western Sierra played great,” Sierra Lutheran coach Michael Nelson said. “They did a great job of pushing tempo and our team never adjusted. I liked our offensive execution and was pleased with our shot selection.”

The Falcons were led by Amanda Almeida’s 12 points and two steals. Ruth Boogman scored six points and grabbed three rebounds, and Aleyna Gilson had seven rebounds.

Dayton reaches finals

TRUCKEE — Dayton improved to 2-0 with a 52-46 win over Lowry on Friday at the Truckee Tournament.

The Dust Devils play host Truckee for the championship today at 1.

“We played well,” Dayton coach Jason Santos said. “We executed the pick and roll well the whole game. They had trouble defending it. They were trying to trap it and hedge it, but we were able to make plays. We struggled when they went to a 1-2-2 zone.”

Dayton, which led by 12 at the half, got 21 points from Trevor Burrows, eight from Josh Pasasouk and seven from Joey Martinez.

Falcons lose heartbreaker

FORESTHILL, Calif. — Rio Vista outscored Sierra Lutheran 14-5 and then held on for a 65-61 win at the Foresthill Wildfire Classic on Friday.

JV BASKETBALL

Carson boys win 2

RENO — Carson High’s JV squad knocked off McDermitt, 59-24, and Damonte Ranch, 57-47, on Saturday at the Winter Invitational at North Valleys.

Carson plays Manogue today at 11 a.m.
