Prep Roundup: Turnovers plague Carson High girls in loss at Spanish Springs

SPARKS — The Carson High girls basketball team played solid for about 18 minutes Tuesday before the game got away.

Spanish Springs outscored Carson, 13-5, over the final six-plus minutes of the third quarter to build a 17-point lead en route to a 71-37 victory in a 4A crossover match.

Carson dropped to 1-3, and will host Hug on Friday at 5:15 p.m.

The Senators had trouble handling the ball, and those mistakes led to 28 points. The Cougars also had 10 second-chance points thanks to a good job on the offensive glass.

“We didn’t take care of the ball,” Carson coach Melissa Larsen said. “We beat ourselves. They didn’t put that much pressure on us, and we couldn’t make passes.

“Bella (Kordonowy) played hard and played very good defense.”

Trailing 14-9 after one quarter, Carson put together an 8-3 run to close to 21-17. Spanish Springs responded with 10 straight points on 3-pointers by Jada Townsell and Autumn Wadsworth plus a putback by Madlyn Winters and a deuce by Townsell.

A basket by Haley Garver and a free throw by Lauren Lemburg made it 31-20 at the half. Two minutes into the third period, the Cougars took control of the game as Malia Barraza scored two baskets and Townsell added another 3-pointer.

Kordonowy led Carson with 12 points and Lily Bouza added seven.

Lowry rolls past Dayton

WINNEMUCCA — The Lowry High School girls basketball team improved to 4-1 on the season after defeating Dayton, 67-21, on Tuesday night in the Northern 3A opener for both teams.

The Lady Bucks raced to a 26-4 lead in the first quarter and rolled to victory from there. The contest was played with a running clock with a minute left in the second quarter. Lowry led 46-7 at halftime.

Dayton scored the first five points of the third quarter but Lowry was still able to increase its lead to 55-15.

Tamia Powell led Dayton with seven points and Hanna Coltrin added three points.

Eleven players scored for Lowry, with Shelby Garrison leading the way with 11 points. Kepa Bengochea and Alyssa Kuskie each scored 10 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Douglas 66, North Valleys 51

RENO — Douglas bolted to an early lead on Tuesday and never looked back on its way to a 66-51 win over North Valleys in Reno.

Douglas (2-0 league, 2-3 overall) held a 19-8 lead after one quarter in the Northern 4A crossover game against North Valleys (0-2, 0-3). The Tigers were on top 32-20 at halftime and put the game away with an 18-11 run in the third quarter.

Hunter Morris scored 13 points, Ian Ozolins 12 and Austin Clutts 12 to lead Douglas.

The Tigers return to action on Friday with a non-league game at 7 p.m. against Eldorado (Las Vegas) in Minden, then they host Grants Pass, Ore., at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Dayton holds on to beat Lowry

WINNEMUCCA — For the second time in five days the Dayton High boys basketball team beat Lowry. The first came last Friday at the Truckee Tournament.

Tuesday’s game counted in the Northern 3A standings, as the Dust Devils held off the Buckaroos, 52-48, in the league opener for both teams.

Chase Peterson made 1-of-2 free throws with 7.4 seconds to play to give Dayton a four-point lead. Lowry’s Brendan Domire knocked down a 27-foot 3-pointer to cut the Dayton lead to 51-48. However, the Buckaroos could not get closer.

Dayton led by as many as 12 points in the third quarter at 38-26. The Buckaroos held the Dust Devils scoreless in the final 3:44 of the third quarter and were able to cut the gap to 38-32 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Lowry rallied to take the lead 45-44 with 3:22 to play after a jump shot by Domire. It was the first lead for Lowry, after making the opening basket of the game.

Trevor Burrows and Joshua Pasasouk made back-to-back baskets with under two minutes to play to give the Dust Devils a 48-45 advantage.

Burrows led Dayton with 18 points and Tyler Stolfich and Pasasouk each added 12 points for the Dust Devils.

Domire led Lowry with 17 points.
