Community sports: Carson High bowlers off to 3-0 start

Carson High’s bowling team is off to a 3-0 start after recent wins over McQueen (26-19) and Douglas (36-9).

Robbie Munoz led the way against Douglas with career-bests of 263 and 670, and Connor Bell had a big day with a 219 and 634. Gabe Gabica rolled a 222 en route to a 612, Brandon Engels had a 223 and 602, and Michael Rhoades had a 224 and 586. Lily Irvin was the top female bowler with a 196 and 578, and Kayleigh Dunbar had a 164 and 436.

Chase Wixon (576), Jackson Ellender (533) and Matt Hinton (526) also eclipsed 500 for three games.

In the win over McQueen, Bell rolled a 217 and 583, Hinton had a 246 and 554, and Taylor Johnson had a 199 and 525. Irvin had a 517 with a high game of 175. Munoz rolled a 512 and Dean Poppenga III had a career-best 200 with a 509 series. Ray Ceragioli and Wixon each rolled 507s.

Bighorns schedule hoop clinic

RENO — The Reno Bighorns will host a basketball clinic at the Reno Events Center Jan. 4 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Bighorns will also hold a winter break dance clinic on Jan. 3 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Truckee Meadows.

The goal of the basketball clinic is to develop kids ages 6 to 14 as whole players, working with all skill levels to cultivate respect, sportsmanship, and work ethic in addition to mastering the fundamentals of the game. Bighorns coaches and players will lead the clinic.

Dance participants will learn choreography, then be invited to perform during pregame on Jan. 28, when the Bighorns face the Northern Arizona Suns. The clinic is open to all girls and boys ages 6-17.

Participants from each clinic will receive a Bighorns T-shirt, Bighorns swag, one ticket to the Bighorns Jan. 5 contest and a certificate of participation. Lunch will be provided at each clinic.

Both clinics are limited to 100 participants. Each participant should bring their own water bottle, snacks, and wear proper attire.

Annual Elks Hoop Shoot to return Jan. 6

Kids ages 8-13 are called to participate in Carson City Elks Lodge’s Hoop Shoot on Jan. 6 at the Multi-purpose Athletic Center, 1860 Russell Way.

The contest offers 25 free throws per student. The winners advance to the district event in Reno, followed by the state event in Hawthorne, then regionals in Las Vegas and nationals in Chicago, Ill., where the winner will be awarded a $25,000 scholarship.

Registration is from 9 to 9:20, with the contest starting at 9:30 a.m. Tennis shoes are mandatory.
