In a true show of this season’s skill, the Lady Wave topped the Northern 4A’s McQueen Lady Lancers 69-40 Tuesday evening.
The Reno team came out on top in the first quarter, quickly jumping to a 10-5 lead.
Fallon coach Anne Smith said the Wave made some defensive adjustments and that did the trick. As the second quarter started, the Lady Wave found their rythmn and jumped out to an 11-point lead.
“We moved some of our players around, which kind of opened up things,” Smith said.
McQueen responded with baskets by Gabby Frank, Kaila Spevak and Kendra McAninch. Fallon, however, had rallied to defend its home court, entering halftime with a 34-18 lead.
The third quarter saw the teams matching each score with Fallon able to open up the lead to 53-34.
The Lady Wave rallied again in the final quarter, outscoring McQueen 15-6.
Smith said it was a hard game but Fallon’s hard work paid off. She gave credit to Caitlyn Welch, saying she was a strong player on the outside. Welch scored five three-point baskets, leading the team with 17 points. She led the charge for the Wave in the second quarter scoring 12 of her points.
“I feel like that second quarter was where we really pulled away,” Smith said.
Lailani Otuafi and Faith Cornmesser were also strong scorers, adding 15 points and 10 respectively.
Smith also said the Wave’s offensive rebounding was on point. She said the Wave controlled the boards.
Fallon also improved on not giving McQueen many free throws, something Smith noted the Wave needed to work on after last weekend.
The Lady Wave play again this weekend with two games. Fallon plays Truckee at home tonight at 6 p.m., then takes on Northern 4A Bishop Manogue in Reno on Saturday.
Smith said she saw Truckee play during a scrimmage earlier this season, but does not know much about Bishop Manogue. She said they would have to be on top of their game for the weekend.
“We just have to stick with what we do and take care of all the tiny details and just prepare,” Smith said.
