Death of Sheriff Smith: It is our melancholy task to record the death of Timothy G. Smith, Sheriff of Ormsby County, from a pistol shot wound inflicted upon him by Thomas Riley, a desperado who he was attempting to arrest for the crime of shooting Mike O’Grady at Empire, in this county. Mr. Smith received his mortal wound about midnight of Thursday the 12th instant and died on yesterday morning at Meyer’s Marshall House on the Virginia City road. The deceased was 43 years of age. No death which has occurred in this county ever caused a more profound sensation of sadness (continued on Tuesday).

The house late this afternoon ordered the national prohibition amendment submitted to a vote of the state legislatures. The house vote stood 282 favoring submission and 128 against.

An open meeting law complaint filed Nov. 18, 1986 had its day in court Monday. After a lengthy court session, District Judge Micheal Griffin voided a closed-door school board decision made in 1986.
