Pioneer High School student tours nation’s capital

“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page,” Saint Augustine declared. It’s difficult to dispute the many benefits of traveling, such as meeting new people, exposure to different perspectives, learning from authentic sources, a sense of renewal upon returning home, and so much more.

In the language of Saint Augustine, Garrett Watkins recently “read” some new pages of this world. Watkins, a senior at Pioneer High School, was able to experience many of the benefits of traveling first hand. Earlier this month, Watkins attended a JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates) conference in Washington, D.C. There, he participated in the skills category which provided him the opportunity to demonstrate his knowledge of interview skills. He competed alongside students from around the nation in mock interview scenarios.

Additionally, Watkins was able to take advantage of his time in D.C. to take in some of the local landmarks and history. Watkins reported some of his favorite experiences on the trip were being able to meet people from all over the nation, visiting the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool, and seeing the Washington Monument.

“I feel grateful that I was given this wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Watkins recounted.

Watkins, who’s widely known among his classmates as being kind and charismatic, is indeed a student who appreciates and learns from his experiences and travels.

When Watkins graduates in June 2018, the wide world will be waiting for him.
